Nebraska's Special Teams

Rhule gonna Rhule:

"Instead, Rhule appears to have taken a blasé approach to replacing one of the best special teams coaches in the country. Optimistic at best. Naïve at worst. It mirrors the strategy used after Tony White left for Florida State — a decision Rhule has since admitted was a misstep."

As I stated, it was a very RISKY hire. We all better hope Maher is just a pure natural? Should have really cut his teeth at somewhere like NW Arkansas State, or something like that? It’s the big leagues as far as CFB goes. Not really a place to learn, unless you are under someone for a while. Lots of moving pieces on ST. We will know fairly quickly as well. Maybe 14-20 special teams plays per game, maybe more. You’ll see it. It will be noticeable.

Maybe Rhule is paying attention to lessons learned by Fred H. A couple hotdogs in the room are less effective than a TEAM. Mike Ekler moves around a lot (not talking about the sidelines). You have to wonder why. The crap on the sidelines draws attention to him, not the team. Kind of like see Dylan at every husker event every time the camera was around. Fred stopped getting hot dogs and bought in on team.

Pretty one side story from someone who simply isnt in the know, but likes to pretend he is
Jeremy has forgotten more about football than most will know in the their lifetime. One thing about @N2FL , he's very objective. Doesn't have skin in the game with Nebraska but enjoys covering bluebloods. I'm not really sure what anyone is disagreeing with here to be honest. By most accounts and comments from local pundits, the Maher hire IS a risky one, and soon, Rhule won't have the leeway to continue to recycle coaches each and every season.

Exactly. Anyone who hasn't previously been a special teams coordinator, almost by definition, would be a risky hire. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad hire. We'll have to see how the season plays out to determine whether the latter is true or not.

IMHO @N2FL has a solid take there. Most of you probably know my “soapbox” about hiring proven, experienced coaches that have demonstrated sustained success… so obviously I agree with that 100%.

I also agree on the possible explanations why ME didn’t get the expanded role he likely was wanting. With new DCRA onboard, I’m assuming MR gave him significant weight in who is and is not part of the defensive coaching staff. MR has said numerous times that he lets his coordinators run their show.

Overall, I share the concern over the succession plan due to the disparity in experience/success between ME and BM… fingers crossed.

I only ask because I simply don't know, who was he going to hire? Ekler and the Iowa dude that went to Michigan State were the top special coaches, and as previously stated he offered Ek one of highest paid salary among specialist coaches, are you suggesting he should have chosen to name him a position coach as well or offer him the top salary. If so would you not blame him for overpaying. He is at a point in his tenure here whether or not he goes one way or the other it's a lose - lose situation. Obviously since his 3rd year hype did not go as predicted, we have fallen back to the let's blame the coach until we get a new one mentality. I get it, I am just as frustrated, the hard part is there are other teams that are doing better faster. I don't know the answer I am just as clueless as the next guy, but we have Rhule for a minimum of 2 more years let's hope it works out, and then in 2 years reevaluate the situation, see if we see progress or you can cry for another 2 years at unknowns. I apologize for the rant please continue and offer your opinion even if they are opposite mine.
