Nebraska Retools at Linebacker With a Smart Portal Strategy
In my March 8 column I wrote about my optimism surrounding Rob Aurich’s defense and his reputation for producing immediate turnarounds. Looking across each leve
The incoming talent seems extremely deep.
My question is why so many bodies to a defense that is going to a 4-2-5 configuration.
Unless some of these guys are rushing the passer on obvious passing downs it seems like we’ve got a lot of bodies for two spots on the defense.
In the mean time ... depth on the DLine is lacking ... I understand its a supply and demand issue but would 2 LBs have equaled 1 DL?Even for two spots, you're gonna want 4-5 guys you're comfortable playing significant reps if you need them to. Then you need another 4-5 developing behind the scenes. I think Nebraska is at that point right now. Their three-man rotation all have NFL ceilings.

I hope you are right about the DLine. It appears our LB and Secondary has quality depth.Don't ask me. I got ripped for suggesting the staff use the money they allocated to sign Kwazi Gilmer and put it towards a RB. I think Gilmer is a really good player, but they could have gotten someone like Justice Haynes for what they were offering Emmett Johnson. It's JMPO that Haynes would be better to have than Gilmer.
I think the D-line is in better shape than a lot of people might think.
Good stuff as always Jeremy. Appreciate your write ups. Hopefully the staff proves everyone wrong in the RB room.
Agree 100%Like I wrote, they could very well be right about not needing another RB. But on the surface, it seems like they could have used a bridge guy for this coming year to give Nelson, Mozee and Rule another year before being relied on for such huge roles. I like those guys, I just think it's a year early for them with such a daunting schedule. I would have gone after a proven guy at RB to pair with Colandrea instead of adding another WR to an already deep, talented room.
If the trio are good enough, they will be good enough this season. We've wasted way too much chasing gap fillers the past few seasons and all they did was get in the way of using Emmett Johnson. Two coaching staffs wasted time not wanting to see what was there for them to see. Reminds me of Cally and his wide receiver fetish. Let's face it neither Dante Dowdell nor that other big back we brought in a season or two earlier were exactly the answer.Like I wrote, they could very well be right about not needing another RB. @N2FL after seeing the spring game ….. did it confirm or change how you feel about the linebacker room. I focused on the offense on Saturday so I’m going to watch it again to check out the Defense
