Nebraska is kicking off the season tonight against Louisville (streaming on ACC+, also available through ESPN Unlimited). The match is in-progress in the first half, with Nebraska up 2-0 on a goal from Nathalie Lewis and another from Ella Rudney on a PK.

This is a bit of a new look team this year, with most of the players who featured on the squad over the past three years having moved on, and 60% of the roster being freshmen or sophormores. As a senior this year, the team will be hoping Nathalie Lewis can turn in an Eleanor Dale/Sarah Weber-esque performance this year, with Rudney and Ella Guyatt hopefully providing strong midfield support. Avery Gillhan takes over in goal and hopefully will be an improvement in the agility department over Cece Villa. Villa had the physicality but I felt like her ability to cover goal and especially to perform in a more sweeper keeper role were lacking. At 5'11" Gillahan also adds an inch of height over Villa.

John Walker is in his 33rd year as head coach and I'm hopeful the team can return to the Big 10 tournament, and maybe the NCAA torunament as well.
 
Nebraska remains up 2-0 at halftime. Louisville had a goal called back for offside, and has had several other dangerous looks but Gillahan has made a couple of nice saves. Our backline is letting too many through balls get by, leaving Gillahan on an island. She's managed to throw Louisville off just to enough when charging out from goal to prevent any scores, though. We'll see if that holds up in the 2nd half. Louisville finished the 2025 regular season in the top 25, so a victory would be a positive sign for Nebraska.

Meanwhile, not a fan of the ACC+ broadcast. Just one commentator instead of two and they appear to have just the one camera and no instant replay available. Fortunately it's all Big 10 or Big 10+ the rest of the way, save for one match against KSU.
 
Nebraska playing #8 Notre Dame tonight on BTN followed by #18 Alabama on Sunday on BIG+. The draw on Sunday against South Dakota has to be counted a diappointment following the 3-1 thrashing of Louisville.

We're up 1-0 in the early going against Notre Dame, though, and a win against a Top 10 team would be a very positive portent for the season to come.
