Final Game Thoughts.
Zero and five.
Nebraska tried to hang with Wisconsin but just couldn’t quite make the plays needed to keep Wisconsin within reach as Wisconsin rolls to a dominant 41-24 victory.
This wasn’t the laydown road loss against a quality opponent we have seen so often in the past dozen years or so. Honestly, this team just isn’t ready to hang with an opponent like Wisconsin. Too many penalties. Too many special teams’ issues. Too many turnovers. Too many mistakes.
But Nebraska played hard tonight. They were competitive. It is just too hard to beat a Wisconsin team while also beating ourselves with mistakes.
And Nebraska time and again couldn’t quite make the play to turn the tide.
Nebraska rolls up over 500 yards offense . . . again . . . only to lose . . . again.
Tonight we saw the good and sometimes bad of freshman QB Adrian Martinez. The bad consisted of two fumbles (one lost). Martinez often times hangs on to the ball too long and either doesn’t throw it away or he forgets to take off downfield. He also keeps rolling out around his RT. This is not a good strategy. Some of the pressure and penalties could be contributed to Martinez. Also, missed some throws and was lucky a couple of balls weren’t picked off.
Okay, enough of the bad. The kid is a gamer. He made some special throws and when he does take off into the open field, it is incredible how quickly he churns up yardage. He ended the night with 384 yards passing and 57 yards running. It’s too bad he is always playing from so far behind.
Obviously, the game plan tonight was to attack the Wisconsin secondary. Nebraska made virtually no effort to establish a running game. Ozigbo was coming off a 170 yard effort and had over 100 yards against Wisconsin last year. Ziggy carried the ball once in the first half and finished with 5 carries for 29 yards.
Perhaps Ziggy feels like he isn’t been used to full effectiveness.
Once again, the offense was stagnant in the first half but came alive in the second half. Unfortunately, by the time the offense kicked it into gear, the defense was gassed. Actually the defense played pretty well early. But then Dicaprio Bootle left the game and the defense gave up 17 points before halftime. Then in the second half, Wisconsin began to pound Nebraska with their powerful running game and the final outcome really was never in doubt.
Third downs were again an issue. While Wisconsin was converting third and 8’s we struggled with third and 3’s and 4’s. This needs to get fixed.
Special teams were awful again. We did manage a 3 yard return on one punt which quadrupled our punt return yardage for the season. Maurice Washington had an electric kickoff return that was called back by a . . . you guessed it . . . a push in the back. We went to our back up punter who actually got a punt downed at the 12. We also came close on two occasions to blocking a punt.
Baby steps.
Some positives.
We may be 0-5, but we have two special WR’s in Stanley Morgan and J.D. Spielman. Spielman had 9 catches for 209 yards and at times made the Wisconsin secondary look foolish. Spielman is starting to make these 200 yard games seem almost ordinary. Morgan chipped in 8 catches for 93 yards that included an impressive leap over a defender. Will we have two thousand yard receivers this year?
But after the top two, who was next? Maurice Washington with 4 catches for 53 yards including two impressive over the shoulder downfield catches along the sideline (although one was called back due to penalty.) He was impressive in the passing game and chipped in with 27 yards rushing on 5 carries. Don’t be concerned with his 17.5 average on two kickoff returns as he was given credit only for a 10 yard return on his big return that was nullified by penalty. He is going to be special.
TE Jack Stoll only had one catch but it was a good one. His 12 yard TD catch was sensational as he took the ball away from a defender and kept his feet inbounds while absorbing a hit from another defender.
Nice to see Mike Williams get a reception after getting 3 in the first game but none since.
It looks like Lamar Jackson cannot redshirt and transfer. He played in his fifth game tonight. Just an FYI.
Was that Khalil Davis that ran down the ball carrier on that swing pass? Man, what a play! Seriously. He also chipped in with a fumble recovery.
I thought Cam Taylor looked decent tonight on a few plays.
Definitely not a positive, but tonight’s WTH moment was Antonio Reed celebrating after a big hit while the ball carrier continued to ramble down field. Remember, he’s a senior. Seriously?
Hey, don’t look now, but we converted a third and one tonight.
We’re starting to get a bit banged up especially on defense. Hopefully some guys like Ty Ferguson will make it back soon. We need them.
Okay, not into moral victories but tonight wasn’t the bitter pill games like Michigan have been. This team is making some progress. They just can’t figure out how to stay out of their own way.
But boy this offense can be fun to watch sometimes. Unfortunately, I think we just got flagged for holding again.

Next up is Northwestern on the road. Don’t look now, but Northwestern just knocked off Michigan State on the road.
No rest for the weary. Dare we say it is a winnable game? Perhaps it is. But it is also a losable game.
When will our suffering end? Gotta keep fighting and hope we can catch a break. Northwestern is coming off back to back games against Michigan and Michigan State. Maybe they will be banged up and perhaps overlook us.

I have now been added to the Quotes taken out of context thread. It is a big honor for me to achieve this in only my 1st official year on this board!
Any fans busting Chinander on defense just please remember last year and how poor Diaco coaches most of the same starters. I truly think it is mostly an issue of S/C and player development of their lack of good play more than the coaching itself. Many of these guys are just not playing very well consistently.
As for the Offense, so many penalties on the OL especially (Farmer seemed to have some major holds) just killed the Offense. Just dropping most of the penalities would have made a huge difference in this and the other theee losses (Michigan was just terrible play period). SF has to be going crazy over this team’s penalty issues. Don’t we have some other guys that can play even up with Farmer? The guy is a penalty almost every play with holding.

The coaching turnover any player on the defensive side who have been here 3 plus years is ridiculous, if i was a player I’d be confused as to whether I should wipe my nose or blow my butt. This defensive scheme can work in the B1G, the players here need time and continuity to develop. In the meantime the coaches and recruiting staff need to go find a few jucos who can play in this system to fill the gaps and some younger guys to redshirt and develop for the future
I don’t think Farmer had any significant penalties tonight but Fairnok sure did. I heard the number 71 so many times tonight I’m gonna use it in a 2 spot tomorrow at Big Red Keno
