Nebraska vs UCLA Game Thread (11/2/24)

I didn't post in here since before the game, but this seems like the best place to put this, mostly just to put my opinion on the record, for whatever it's worth.

I am sorely disappointed in the performance of this staff. The team was poorly prepared on both sides and adjusting to UCLA was ponderously slow, especially on offense. True there are some excuses, like their having a bye to put in new things, and that they're clearly better than their record. But the players have more talent, experience, and effort than the coaches appear to know how to use, and we're getting frequently out-coached in prep and in-game.

I have a lot of respect for coach Rhule as a person and a leader, but if he can really make this team better he needs to start putting it on film.

I'm still so pissed I'm just going to leave it at that.

It is hard to understand and accept. At times it truly feels as though the gods are lined up against Nebraska. Has any team in recent time suffered as much and as often?

EDIT: Make that 28-0. Nevada just botched the kickoff and CSU recovers in the end zone.

Can't believe how NU has regressed after the start they had, including destroying CU.

There were signs in the CU game that we were playing above our heads, like being shut out in the 2nd half.

We're not beating SC no matter what QB we use. It's all gonna come down to the Wisconsin game. Another mediocre team, and we have home-field advantage (not that it means much). There is absolutely no excuse not to win that game. Lose it, and it's gonna be another miserable offseason. I'm hoping it's a night game, because we tend to play better at night.

Great take.

In short, HCMR needs to make changes in his staff to address the poor performance on Offense and Special Teams. It sends a terrible and dangerous message to players… that the HC holds players to a higher standard then he does his own (extremely well compensated) staff.

Whether these are actual replacements or reassigning roles/responsibilities… it needs to be done. We have enough player-talent to win more than we are.

I think the inconsistency on Defense reflects that TW still needs to improve his own ability and “command” of that unit.

These are the same frustrating issues we’ve seen in past HC’s. Waiting too long to make changes to staff that are not getting it done and/or haven’t gotten it done in the past. The curse of hiring and then retaining staff based on things other than their talent/results.

So I’m re-watching the game and UCLA second possession. We have them third and nine I think it was Nebraska’s number 17. rushes in, has the quarterback in his sites, but because he runs so hard and doesn’t break down, he can’t make the tackle and he blows right past him, allowing the UCLA quarterback to just break around the corner for the first down. That is absolutely unbelievable. Our players do not understand how to break down to prepare to make the tackle. That is junior high technique, to break down so that the player doesn’t juke you and leave you standing there and that’s exactly what happened.
 
Also, and I talked about this after the first couple games, we are slow to the corners. We lack speed on defense. Better angles will most certainly help that but our speed is not good.

#17is a ture freshman, cut him a little slack for not having his technique sharp yet.
