I think there are some positive things to build on from this game. Most important, I didn't see any quit from any players at any point during the game. There were more than a few times during the previous 5 seasons when I thought a few Huskers had mailed it in. Was there a difference in talent between Ohio State and Nebraska? Absolutely, especially in skill position players on offense. But Ohio State probably has better overall recruits compared with every other college team in the country not named Alabama and Clemson (and possibly Georgia, LSU). If Nebraska can consistently get this type of effort every game during the season and also cut out the mental mistakes & turnovers, good things can happen for this team.
Overall, Nebraska's D line did a good job much of the game containing Fields and stopping the Buckeye run game. They were much more disciplined in their approach than I have seen in a while. True, there was no JK Dobbins in the backfield, but credit needs to go to the Huskers. OSU's final rushing total is somewhat misleading. There were no big runs by an OSU RB when the game was on the line that I can recall. It was actually painful for me to watch Ohio State try and run against the Husker defense during the 1st half (excluding QB scrambles by Fields).
Nebraska was on the short end of at least 3 major penalties I can recall: 2 "targeting" calls and 1 pass interference call. Yeah, it sucks to be on the wrong end of major bad calls. Recall I'm an OSU alum. I watched in horror as SEC officials handed the CFP playoff win to Clemson with several bullsh*t calls, so I know the feeling all too well. The fumble return for a TD by the Buckeye D (erroneously overturned by replay) was worse than Corey Dixon's negated punt return for a TD because replay was involved and inexplicably made the wrong call. Would it have made a difference in the outcome in today's game if those errant flags against Nebraska had been picked up? Possibly in the sportsbook, but Ohio State would still have won the game by a comfortable margin. But it definitely matters next week w/r/t player eligibility against Wisconsin. The B1G Ten needs to own up to the 2 errant targeting calls and allow those 2 players to play against the Badgers; the 3rd targeting call was absolutely correct.
I wonder if Nebraska coaches have watched video of the Florida offense back when WR/RB Percy Harvin was driving SEC DCs and defenses crazy. Some guy named Urban Meyer was Gators head coach back then. He and OC Dan Mullen figured out many ways to get Harvin the ball in space. Worked pretty well, if memory serves. Too well, actually. Years later after Meyer became head coach at Ohio State (and was forgiven for the beating administered by Florida during the 2007 BCS NC game), the Buckeyes would run some of those same plays very effectively with Braxton Miller and Jalin Marshall. Joe Gibbs was all-too-eager to "borrow" from Tom Osborne's playbook; 3 Super Bowl wins says he was pretty damn smart for doing so. The Huskers need to get the ball to McCaffrey (Robinson, Martinez) in space and get out of his (their) way, lol. Doesn't matter who originally came up with the plays.
I know Husker fans ultimately want a return to the success Nebraska enjoyed during the mid-90s. That was a once-in-a-lifetime run in Lincoln. Given the prevailing demographics and changing dynamics of the game, don't expect a repeat of 60-3 with 3 NCs in a 5 year span. The state might offer "the good life" (and Runzas), but it's located in the middle of a FBS football recruiting wasteland relative to other parts of the country. It is what it is. Note that I'm *not* saying NU can't win another national championship at some point in the future under the right circumstances (and, perhaps, a little good fortune). Nor am I saying there aren't any good players to be recruited in Nebraska and the contiguous states; just not nearly enough of them, a by product of a very small population in the region.
Good luck the rest of the B1G Ten season. I'll be rooting for Nebraska the rest of the regular season. A rematch in Indianapolis is still a possibility. I actually hope that happens, as it would mean both teams had good seasons. More importantly, though, it would signify Nebraska and Ohio State were able to play at least 6 games -- meaning the Covid-19 situation didn't get worse (and possibly improved). And that's really what we're all hoping for.
Stay safe & healthy. GBR!
