Nebraska @ Ohio State Game Thread (10/24/20)

I disagree as well. Players need to take care of the ball and but an end to these penalties. Could have been a closer game. I think we're getting closer if we can fix those problems.
We've been talking about fixing those problems for three staffs now and nothing changes. All it is is talk for how many years with no actual action

I think there are some positive things to build on from this game. Most important, I didn't see any quit from any players at any point during the game. There were more than a few times during the previous 5 seasons when I thought a few Huskers had mailed it in. Was there a difference in talent between Ohio State and Nebraska? Absolutely, especially in skill position players on offense. But Ohio State probably has better overall recruits compared with every other college team in the country not named Alabama and Clemson (and possibly Georgia, LSU). If Nebraska can consistently get this type of effort every game during the season and also cut out the mental mistakes & turnovers, good things can happen for this team.

Overall, Nebraska's D line did a good job much of the game containing Fields and stopping the Buckeye run game. They were much more disciplined in their approach than I have seen in a while. True, there was no JK Dobbins in the backfield, but credit needs to go to the Huskers. OSU's final rushing total is somewhat misleading. There were no big runs by an OSU RB when the game was on the line that I can recall. It was actually painful for me to watch Ohio State try and run against the Husker defense during the 1st half (excluding QB scrambles by Fields).

Nebraska was on the short end of at least 3 major penalties I can recall: 2 "targeting" calls and 1 pass interference call. Yeah, it sucks to be on the wrong end of major bad calls. Recall I'm an OSU alum. I watched in horror as SEC officials handed the CFP playoff win to Clemson with several bullsh*t calls, so I know the feeling all too well. The fumble return for a TD by the Buckeye D (erroneously overturned by replay) was worse than Corey Dixon's negated punt return for a TD because replay was involved and inexplicably made the wrong call. Would it have made a difference in the outcome in today's game if those errant flags against Nebraska had been picked up? Possibly in the sportsbook, but Ohio State would still have won the game by a comfortable margin. But it definitely matters next week w/r/t player eligibility against Wisconsin. The B1G Ten needs to own up to the 2 errant targeting calls and allow those 2 players to play against the Badgers; the 3rd targeting call was absolutely correct.

I wonder if Nebraska coaches have watched video of the Florida offense back when WR/RB Percy Harvin was driving SEC DCs and defenses crazy. Some guy named Urban Meyer was Gators head coach back then. He and OC Dan Mullen figured out many ways to get Harvin the ball in space. Worked pretty well, if memory serves. Too well, actually. Years later after Meyer became head coach at Ohio State (and was forgiven for the beating administered by Florida during the 2007 BCS NC game), the Buckeyes would run some of those same plays very effectively with Braxton Miller and Jalin Marshall. Joe Gibbs was all-too-eager to "borrow" from Tom Osborne's playbook; 3 Super Bowl wins says he was pretty damn smart for doing so. The Huskers need to get the ball to McCaffrey (Robinson, Martinez) in space and get out of his (their) way, lol. Doesn't matter who originally came up with the plays.

I know Husker fans ultimately want a return to the success Nebraska enjoyed during the mid-90s. That was a once-in-a-lifetime run in Lincoln. Given the prevailing demographics and changing dynamics of the game, don't expect a repeat of 60-3 with 3 NCs in a 5 year span. The state might offer "the good life" (and Runzas), but it's located in the middle of a FBS football recruiting wasteland relative to other parts of the country. It is what it is. Note that I'm *not* saying NU can't win another national championship at some point in the future under the right circumstances (and, perhaps, a little good fortune). Nor am I saying there aren't any good players to be recruited in Nebraska and the contiguous states; just not nearly enough of them, a by product of a very small population in the region.

Good luck the rest of the B1G Ten season. I'll be rooting for Nebraska the rest of the regular season. A rematch in Indianapolis is still a possibility. I actually hope that happens, as it would mean both teams had good seasons. More importantly, though, it would signify Nebraska and Ohio State were able to play at least 6 games -- meaning the Covid-19 situation didn't get worse (and possibly improved). And that's really what we're all hoping for.

Stay safe & healthy. GBR!

Really only two staffs....it was not as bad under Pellini.

But you “fix” those types of problems with consistency/Longevity in the staff and experience and maturity in the players.

It will get better....but we need patience.

It pisses me off royally though, I will admit. That lazy delay penalty right after the kickoff 2nd half. I Ilterally threw my book at the TV!

In the end....everyone got what was needed from this game.

Ohio State got a solid win with zero things to cause people to doubt they can win a National Championship.

Television announcers are happy with all the Justin Fields and Ohio State is wonderful storylines they can continue to run with

Big 10 is happy because their showcase money maker did well and did not get derailed

Big 10 is happy because they can feel superior that they “punished” Nebraska sufficiently

Nebraska got to play...and showed some improvement and flashes of possibilities while doing it!

Everybody wins! Compared with a situation just a month and a half ago that was plainly disastrous for our young team.

Time to flush it....move on to Wiscy...try to keep improving...

Well two good things:
Day apologizes to Nebraska and Scott Frost for running that score in at the end
Second but not least:
Unliked Purdue defeats hated Iowa

yay!!

I'm sorry Nebraskans, I left that state 45 years ago because it was so obvious what happens in the World's Largest Small Town. We fired our way to oblivion and we deserve every bit of it. Scott Frost can't fix what a corrupt Miami educated Athletic Director hired by an idiot Regent destroyed.

I like this perspective. Definitely more positive than what I’ve been thinking / feeling. Thanks!

"Nebraska got to play...and showed some improvement and flashes of possibilities while doing it!"

Really? After 5 touchdowns there appeared some improvement and flash of what? Dream On, read about the 71, 72, 94, 95 and 97 teams, because that is all that is left of the "University of Nebraska Cornhuskers".

Really? They got to play and after an hour lost by five touchdowns? I like participation trophies, they show that competitive people and teams can triumph as losers.

Very well said.

I’m mostly encouraged. Our lines held their own against what are typically very strong units for OSU. It’s hard to tell, because it was OSU, but our D-line must be able to generate a pass rush on their own. Most of our pressure and sacks were the results of blitzes.

I realize Nebraska hasn't had much of a pass rush in recent years. Where's the next Suh, Wistrom, Connealy, Glover, Stewart, David et. al? Another Mike Brown to be the on-field coach would certainly help, too. The Huskers have 2 players I think will be difference makers on defense in the future: Henrich & Hutmacher. Just a matter of when they're ready. That being said, I think the Nebraska didn't want to sell out to try and get to Fields. We've seen what happens when the Husker D loses gap integrity & contain way too many times in recent years. On occasion, it's been record setting -- and not in a good way. Damn, Melvin Gordon just ran for another 53 yards. Sorry, lol.

Fields has one really bad tendency -- sometimes holding on to the ball way too long trying to make a big play. Happened a few times in the game today, too. Yes, he can get away with it at times because he's elusive and strong (for a QB). Other times his stud receivers will bail him out by eventually getting open and/or making great catches. But there's no reason -- given his skillset and a talented O line pass blocking -- he should have been sacked 31 times last year.

You fix problems every year, not once. Think about the level of football we saw the first few weeks this year. There was a ton of mistakes being made by nearly every team. The last couple of weeks that’s improved. Let the next couple of weeks determine if ‘nothing changes’ before you begin another epic rant.

Hate to interrupt when you’re on a roll, but I believe you mean “Chancellor”, vs. “Regent”
