1991/1992 - I was in college. I was frustrated. Fans screamed for Mcbrides head. Fan (some) screamed to replace TO. Fans screamed to replace the option.
Instead, they stuck with TO. Stuck with CM. Stuck with the option and tweaked the D. Added the unity council. NU never has one of the greatest runs in CF history if firings instead of tweeks occur.

2021 - Husker BB was on a streak as poor as any weve had, and that says a lot about where we were considering the program. Many wanted Fred gone. Hated Fred. The AD stuck with Fred, he tweaked things. Culture change. D emphasis. Age emphasis (get old). We go on a run thats never happened here, because we chose to tweak as opposed to firing. We go along with the fire crowd, NU BB never has its magical run

2002. Frank is allowed to change his staff. Yea, some firings occured, etc....but the AD chose Tweaks/overhaul for the HC rather than firing the HC. 2003 is a massive turnaround and then Pedey fires everyone and the 20 year downfall occurs. No telling if sticking with Franks works but firing didnt.

My point is this, there are times when coaches should be fired AKA Scott Frost. But there has been solid evidence that many times, letting the right guy tweak thinks as opposed to firing is the better option. We literally do not have the best run at our biggest mens sports, if ADs cave to the "fire him crowd". Thats fact.

I feel like many who yell fire today, are the same smart fans that would have or maybe was yelling fire in 1992, 2002, and 2021. Not because firing was smart, but because they just like to fire the guy in most cases. Those fans just cant use common sense. They just say fire the coach anytime things dont go well.



Lets remember this. Our AD a month ago was trying to do that

We were completely spoiled. I don't think until now people understand how hard it is to maintain that type of consistent high level winning over such a long period of time. There was almost always bitching and moaning about TO. From the beginning people were always saying he isn't Devaney. The only time it stopped was for a couple of years in the 80's and for about 5 years in the 90's

You're absolutely right. In one of the Big 10 documentaries about TO, they interviewed Paul Miles and to paraphrase, he said if you asked any AD in the country if they hired a coach who could guarantee a minimum of 9 wins for 25 years straight, there isn't a price tag you could put on that. Forget about the 90s, I'd "settle" for the 80s.

Many people forget how great Nebraska was in the 80’s.

I would gladly have 1980's type success for Nebraska football right now. Every year they would be in the playoffs.

People dont realize we were a few plays away from 3 peat NT. A fumble by RCraig and we likely beat Clemson and win in 1981
If there is instant replay in the 80s, we beat PSU and win in 82 most likely

And then of course in 83 we lose by half a fingertip on the 2 point conversion.

Those 3 years were basically about as good as the 90s, we just didnt get it done

For example we dont win in 97 if not for a magic kick. A kick that wouldnt have gone our way in the 80s it seems

Frank had made changes in the coaching staff. Improvements had happened in 2003 after the disastrous 2002 season. I don't know if anyone would have said much if Frank and the old staff had been fired after 2002. But the improvements in 2003 season should have saved the jobs of the new group. Frank's new staff should have had at least 1 more year to show improvement.

But you are correct about the talent slipping. But that was under the old staff that didn't like being on the road recruiting (I read that somewhere). The old staff had been on the road recruiting for multiple decades. The talent level would probably would have gone up with the new, younger coaches.

My opinions are only conjecture. But we will never know because Pederson couldn't recognize the improvement in 2003. And look what his decision led to for the past couple of decades.

Perfectly stated. Pederson knew he was going to fire Frank before he left Pitt.
