Nebraska greatest runs in MBB and MFB

The huskers greatest runs came after decisons by ADs to have a coach tweak things rather than fire people. Isnt that interesting.

1991/1992 - I was in college. I was frustrated. Fans screamed for Mcbrides head. Fan (some) screamed to replace TO. Fans screamed to replace the option.
Instead, they stuck with TO. Stuck with CM. Stuck with the option and tweaked the D. Added the unity council. NU never has one of the greatest runs in CF history if firings instead of tweeks occur.

2021 - Husker BB was on a streak as poor as any weve had, and that says a lot about where we were considering the program. Many wanted Fred gone. Hated Fred. The AD stuck with Fred, he tweaked things. Culture change. D emphasis. Age emphasis (get old). We go on a run thats never happened here, because we chose to tweak as opposed to firing. We go along with the fire crowd, NU BB never has its magical run

2002. Frank is allowed to change his staff. Yea, some firings occured, etc....but the AD chose Tweaks/overhaul for the HC rather than firing the HC. 2003 is a massive turnaround and then Pedey fires everyone and the 20 year downfall occurs. No telling if sticking with Franks works but firing didnt.

My point is this, there are times when coaches should be fired AKA Scott Frost. But there has been solid evidence that many times, letting the right guy tweak thinks as opposed to firing is the better option. We literally do not have the best run at our biggest mens sports, if ADs cave to the "fire him crowd". Thats fact.

I feel like many who yell fire today, are the same smart fans that would have or maybe was yelling fire in 1992, 2002, and 2021. Not because firing was smart, but because they just like to fire the guy in most cases. Those fans just cant use common sense. They just say fire the coach anytime things dont go well.

Lets remember this. Our AD a month ago was trying to do that

This was the outcome that I expected in this case. Regardless, this alleged mistake was likely the impetus in the Huskers bring in another RB for 2026 announced today. Coincidentally.

All true.

Conversely, if NU hangs on to Bill Jennings, waiting for the right tweaks, Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, and 35 years of Husker glory never happen.

Nobody has a crystal ball.

Bill Jennings' time was before I was old enough to know what a football is. Was he making tweaks? Was there any improvement?

Bob Devaney made tweaks when people were calling for his head after 1968. Tom was always making tweaks, constantly improving, just not enough until the 1990s.

In Frost's case, he was making changes, but we never saw any improvement. Even though I was one of those wanting to keep Scott (I had no idea what was going on in the background), it is evident to me (my great 20/20 hindsight) that he wasn't improving.

The changes Rhule has been making has brought some improvements, just not fast enough for most of us. Now, after the changes made during the off season, let's see how good Matt's crystal ball is.

1991/1992 -Revisionist history. Hot seat? T.O. was Big 8 coach if the year.

2021- Fred is an entirely different scenario. You give him more of a leash because he was a proven head coach and nobody questioned his system, ability to coach, or to draw up schemes.

2003 - Firing Frank was probably the correct move. The talent was slipping. He was a terrible OC and had to hire Barney who wasn't a splash hire. The disaster was the coaching search and hiring of Callahan. If we hired Urban, nobody would be saying this was a bad move.

Wrong
90 91 almost everyone thought mcbride should ne fired and the option scrapped

Hoiberg wasnt a diff scenario, it was exactly that

Wtfe
Urban was never coming, he said hed not play for an AD that fires a 10-3 coach
The rest of your points are strawman

I agree that there was major concern about the defensive concept in 1990 and 1991 especially against teams from Florida but not “almost everyone wanted the option scrapped” in that timeframe.

Tommy Frazier came here after the 1991 season because we wanted him to play quarterback and run the option while Colorado wanted him as a DB. If everyone wanted the option scrapped, why would the best option QB in the country elect to come here specifically to run the option? And McBride was never on the hot seat.

Hoiberg took an Iowa State team that had several losing seasons and turned them into a winner. He became head coach of the Chicago Bulls. He is know as an elite offensive mind for his ability to create space, control pace, and draw up plays out of a time out.

Frank was not only a first time head coach, but a first time offensive coordinator. He was terrible as a coordinator and that was masked for several years because of Crouch's ability to beat the edge with raw speed. His teams got worse and the bottom fell out after TO's assistants started retiring and players graduated through the system.

They are completely different in that Fred was a proven head coach and those early years went against his norms. While Frank, had no prior success to draw from, but several bad decisions.

As far as Urban goes, this is all speculation because any coach from Utah was beneath us and we never approached him. We certainly would have been an attractive job, but on the flip side Pederson so mismanaged things and may have been unattractive to work for. However, in today's CFB, firing a coach in his spot isn't so unusual.

Disagree the bold.

Frank had made changes in the coaching staff. Improvements had happened in 2003 after the disastrous 2002 season. I don't know if anyone would have said much if Frank and the old staff had been fired after 2002. But the improvements in 2003 season should have saved the jobs of the new group. Frank's new staff should have had at least 1 more year to show improvement.

But you are correct about the talent slipping. But that was under the old staff that didn't like being on the road recruiting (I read that somewhere). The old staff had been on the road recruiting for multiple decades. The talent level would probably would have gone up with the new, younger coaches.

My opinions are only conjecture. But we will never know because Pederson couldn't recognize the improvement in 2003. And look what his decision led to for the past couple of decades.

1 - Everyone meaning a large chuck of the fans. If you were alive back then, youd remember. TO had no plans to junk the option. AGain, a large number of fans wanted mcbride gone. Many. AD and TO stuck with him and made tweeks as per my OP

2 - You keep strawman my arguement. Many thought Fred should go. Fred had just had one of the worst runs in program history, the AD chose tweeks. your point on fred has nothing to do with what I was saying

3 - We chose to tweek franks situation. It was staring to work, then the change was made. Dumb

Nothing in your points really address the main OP

I absolutely recall many calling for TO and CM’s head. In 1993 on the football forum’s the calls for TO’s head grew more intense after losing 7 bowl games in a row. Couldn’t win the games that mattered, couldn’t recruit, slow players, outdated offense were the predominant comments on the forums. It was brutal.

Then the comments by those fans were ridiculous/uneducated to say it mildly.

Nebraska played for the national championship during the 1993 season and lost in controversial fashion by “2” points to the 2nd ranked team in the country. The Nebraska defense was not an issue in 1993…ask Charlie Ward, William Floyd, and Trev Alberts.

No doubt, but losing 7 bowl games in a row wasn’t helping narrative. Kudos to the administration for sticking with TO.

Edit: In the late 1980s and early 1990’s online forums were called BBBs. I guess anonymity contributed to online toxic behavior not too different than today.

The administration was not going to fire Tom Osborne after losing the national championship game by 2 points playing Florida State in a “home game/Orange Bowl” in the state of Florida. Nebraska was ascending and any “knowledgeable fan could see that.

The thought of even entertaining the firing of TO at that point is ludicrous at best.
