Nebraska Football Doesn't Have a Quarterback Competition

After reading the Kaleb Henry article the article concluded with this:

"Since the legendary TO retired, Nebraska has had maybe two or three actual quarterback battles."

And concluded the biggest one was Eric Crouch and Bobby Newcomb. Interesting that that competition resulted in a Heisman trophy and a trip to a National Championship game. Perhaps competitions are a good thing.

And with NIL, a thing of the past.

Maybe that’s good. Prevents Ohio State and Texas from stockpiling them. Or at least slows it down a bit. Those schools don’t have unlimited money either.
Maybe. Money doesn't make a guy a better player the way competition does. I suppose a guy could have enough self-determination to get better so he'd garner a higher paying contract. I'm no psychologist, but I'd bet more players respond better to external competition than inner drive.

Unlimited money isn't needed, just more than the other guys.

There are definitely haves and havenots. Manning (Texas) made millions sitting on the bench his first year. I don't have numbers, but I'd bet not many schools can dish out that kind of cash to a bench-warmer, even if he's the projected future starter. With the current portal rules, there's no guarantee he'll be on the team next year. It's conceivable Manning could have received a better offer and jumped ship. All those millions for naught. Cost of doing business, I suppose, but you have to start to wonder if the cost is that high, is the ROI worth it.

But, but.....
Congratulations on previous performance QB1 Colandrea!
Excited for a new year, new attitude.

Possibly... but Oregon is sitting the guy we were paying $3M+ to for a year to learn from the guy they're paying $5M+ to. Some of these schools have an insane financial backing. We can only dream of that world here.

I think there are exceptions but overall I believe it’s spreading the talent out.

One has to wonder if there were many programs willing to pay what we were. His good, but not great numbers, his alleged 'baggage' from family, his apparent physical limitations make me wonder just how much he's getting paid to sit and watch? Oregon may not have as much invested in the QB room as some think. We are going to have a someone with P5 starts, and rated pretty high coming out of high school sitting 3rd string. That in itself if pretty impressive. Not $5 million impressive, but not shabby.

This should be easily answered by all the posters on this board who claim NU isn't spending as much money as they should. They can simply check the numbers the Ducks are spending and see where the backup QB lands.

If Colandrea knows when and where to throw the ball away, we'll be better off, IMO. I'd rather lose a down than take a sack. I know he's being touted with the ability to make something out of nothing and that's great, as long as it's done with intelligent prudence.

Hopefully, we will have an improved o-line. Many here thought it was the o-line coach that was the problem. He’s gone. Problem solved? Nothing helps improve a QB in the pass game like a strong running game.

He appears to have a mindset and nose for moving the chains, grinding out first downs with pace.
Please let this be true.
