Another good article from the Athletic. We are set to witness a sea change in college athletics, particularly football and men’s basketball. In my opinion, the changes will especially benefit programs that have momentum, like Alabama, Clemson, tOSU, Georgia, LSU and maybe Oklahoma. But I also think they will benefit Nebraska, despite our relative lack of population. Why? Because no one follows their team like Nebraska. It’s why the 95 Huskers win every poll or contest around greatest player ever. It’s why recruits constantly win on line polls. Scott alluded to twitter follows and likes in his signing day comments.

Scott would smart to retain Blake Lawrence and Adi Kunalic to brief him on social media and how athletes will be able to monetize their following on twitter and instagram and how to track that. Then, start selling the near future to kids and their families. It may not deliver the message he wants, but it will bring in talent, for sure.

We may not like the changes coming, but they are coming. Better to get ahead of them.

Change is coming, but the NCAA didn’t have answers for Congress on how soon it will happen

This is still true. Was in Jamaica a few weeks ago and wore my Nebraska hat. So many people either also wearing Husker red or saying go Big Red. We got the Nebraska Chant going across from another Catamaran. At our resort I saw like 2 Wisconsin hats/shirt, 1 LSU hat and zero Ohio State apparel all week. And ten times that Nebraska gear. I saw the same thing in Phoenix a week ago at the Waste Management Tournament. Sitting by the 13th green on Saturday some people got the go Big Red Chant going.

These changes are coming. I'm curious how we are going to stop an Alabama booster from giving a kid one million dollars when he inks on the dotted line with Bama on national signing day.

This is a death sentence for Nebraska if they don't put a max on what a kid can get. We have a ton of people that are passionate, but our largest booster doesn't care about football. And for every Howard Hawks, Alabama and USC have 100s of them. We also care about football, but complain that we have to pay donations, that we shouldn't schedule teams like Central Michigan, etc.

Here was the Lincoln airport and a picture of the private jets that showed up when USC came to town about a decade ago. Literally ran out of room.

I for one don't like this for many reasons. I support the athletes and agree they need to be treated fairly on their contributions. That being said where does the 'student' part come into play. If these players want to get paid I am all for it, just not as part of the collegiate world. The main focus should be on producing 'student athletes' If you want to go pro and get paid, go for it but you should have to pay your dues and actually show you are top talent, not be rewarding in some artificially inflated NLI bidding war.

This could be a long post, I will summarize the main concerns I see need to be addressed, or this NLI payment process will become a runaway train.

First and foremost is the idea that it can and will create competitive imbalances not only across conferences but also within each school. Take wrestling as an individual sport in college. The best wrestlers may go to the highest NLI school in this new world. Imagine Penn State being able to 'buy' the top wrestlers in each weight class. What is the NLI worth of a baseball, softball, volleyball or other sport player? How do they feel if their counterpart in another sport gets NLI money and they don't.

How do you ensure fairness in NLI payments? Geography, each colleges financial health, boosters and even state legislature all may come into play. What constitutes cheating in recruiting if you have NLI payments in that process.

The last thing is still controversial but the college athletes do get 'paid' via scholarship, food, board, specialized coaching and training. This is a huge advantage over a regular student. The $ value of this over 4 years is probably upwards of $150k, per athlete. If they put in the work they also get a degree that, should athletics end for them, allow them to get decent employment. So they do get some return on the sweat equity and enjoyment of playing sports in college. It isn't a one way deal.

This sucks. What happens when they get caught NOT paying taxes on their income? Jail, lose a scholie? I know that is an over reaction but if they NCAA can't police what is going on now how in the heck will they be able to police additional issues?

This will be the end of college football. They will be pro's and the big markets will rule. Fans of the teams without the $ will lose interest, and the TV deals will start to dry up. It will all come crashing down. but hey, a few players will "get theirs" before hand.

I still say, they should only get the stipend they receive today. They can still profit off of their likeness etc.. however...that money goes into a specific fund that can only be cashed out "after" they graduate. If they choose to leave early for the NFL, Majors etc...that money is forfeited and goes back to the schools general fund. Even that isn't a great solution. It's Pandora's Box for sure.

Always said,,, they start getting paid i’d quit watching. Do they sit out meaningless games because they only want to play prime time games. And so and so gets paid and the folks blocking and doing all the work get nothing... oops i’m sorry i missed that block.

Perhaps they take the total profits and spread it equally among the team. Socialism is gaining steam ya know..;)

There will be paying of incoming freshmen by local car companies to promo some cars.. as if this is different than boosters?, what happens when kid gets injured or redshirts, or wants to transfer, i suppose the car co will want money back. Some kids will be getting paid b4 they take a snap.

This will divide locker rooms in about 3 days at the college level. Its gonna ruin the best sport on tv. Were total fools if we believe what they're trying to sell. We are allowing kids to dictate that to us that the value of the education is worth zero, only cash will do. And that the 2% of FB player that get drafted are more important than the hundreds of athletes at that school getting a free education.

The idea that "selling their likeness" can be seperated from boosters and the historical actions of the SEC and old SW Confr. is a total laugh.

Kids that wanna sell their lisence should have to forfeit their scholarship.

Going to be very curious to see where this goes. I think it's going to create a giant division between the top 20 or so schools and everyone else.

I suspect many schools will completely fold their programs within 20 years because they won't have the money. Conference realignment will be a must. 2-3 conferences going forward, IMO with the big boys and then the rest of the schools will try it in the smaller conferences but those will fold, IMO. Little money coming from tv contracts to the smaller conferences. They won't be able to keep the programs running for long and I think we are going to see a net loss for kids. How many times have we heard from a kid that lives in less than ideal circumstances say they stayed focused on getting out of their situation by focusing on sports knowing that it was their ticket out of a bad situation?

Fewer schools = fewer scholarships = fewer poor people having the chance at a college education.
