That is a piece of art.
It’s an replica of a 1890 Allen Town, made by my Father-In-Law Tom Long.
It started out as a big block of wood, he used to use all hand power tools till his arthritis really kicked in. He uses an electric drill and saw to cut his brass. Makes his own brass and screws, engraves them, it’s pretty amazing.
I lost some of the early stage pictures but found a couple from mid stage of build….

Is the wood a tiger maple? I'm not sure what else gives that kind of striping effect.
Yes, he says it’s the way he cuts it. Under light the stripes “tiger eye” really cool effect.

So your FiL clearly has a lot of experience in woodworking besides making firearms. What did he do?

He’s very artistic, but he was a quality control manager for a die an forge. He’s rebuilt Harley’s from nothing, repainted them everything. The detail you’d thought it just came from show room floor rather than 2-3 completely junked bikes.
I have to assume that he's amazing at his job because a QC guy with this type of artistic talent has to be a perfectionist.
Nailed it, he’s retired now though. He wasn’t always received so well when he’d have a line do everything over, but your right he wouldn’t send out parts with blemishes.
