MLS 2017

Season starts today.

I've been heavily invested in all things Chelsea such that I really have no idea what SKC's roster looks like after the offseason. I do know they decided they needed to get younger. They play today at 6PM CST, so we'll see.

No season tickets this year. All four kids playing sports this summer and my oldest is turning a corner and should be playing regionally. Should be a busy and fun summer, though the kids play soccer year-round.

RSL season opener is underway as I right this.

National team will play there next two Hex games in a few weeks to boot. Bruce 1-0-1 with the two non-sanctioned FIFA matches from the January Camp. Speaking of KC great to see Benny Feilhaber back as the play-maker on the national team too.

Nicky Rimando saved a PK and it ended 0-0. Michael Bradley played very well for Toronto

SKC dictates the game, controls possession. And should have lost. So, I'll take the 0-0 draw vs. DCU.

But.......I really liked what I saw. Two MAJOR improvements this year in Gerso and Ilie. Gerso is the winger they haven't had for awhile. Not sure he can finish, but he's dangerous. Ilie, simply, looks to be the calm, directing influence in DMid absolutely needed. You definitely see his La Masia upbringing out there. Great on the ball and in tight quarters.

A little concerned we had somewhere around 65% possession and didn't pepper the goal more. First game. And holy cow, RFK needs to be put out to pasture. That field was PATHETIC.

Overall, that was what, I think, SKC supporters wanted to see in game 1.

NYRB crash the party in Atlanta with two late 2nd half goals. Needless to say, many of my Georgians will be pissed. The last goal was probably offsides. Barely, and probably never gets called. Then Geiger shows red to send them to 10 men. And the place goes downhill really fast in their franchise opener. Refs needs escorted out by security. Way to show, AUFC fans.

Ha. If they would have started AUFC 7 years ago, I would have been a season ticket holder. Now I'm in Omaha more than not, so it's SKC. I like the management in KC, and like how they play. Plus, SKC uniforms are damn beautiful. And I'm pretty sure the refs didn't need an escort off the field when the Wiz upgraded their brand to SKC. It'll be interesting to see if this single opening game starts to define the AUFC fans.

........and my appreciation for Orlando fans hits a new high. I'd copy it and bring it to SKC if I didn't respect their originality.

Minnesota built an expansion team. Atlanta built an expansion team. They did so in very different manners. One went far and wide and spent some money. One was very much more transparent in their desire to bring in a bigger fan base and appeal to them. Happens to be the same team.

Atlanta, through 2 games including the snowfest this weekend, is fun fun fun to watch. Not so, with Minny.

Let see who's organization put together the better team after 15 games. Then, we'll see after year 5. We'll see if the Minny owners know what they are doing. We'll also see if the Atlanta group can sustain what they've put together.

Snow games are fun. If you missed the ATL-MINN game, see if you have it On-Demand. Highly recommended. Terrible, but fun.

Was a bad hire from the beginning and I have been quite vocal about it. The new owner and GM has made this team a mess. From perhaps the most feared team in the league under Jason Kries to an all-so ran.

Time for some updates. Interested to hear the RSL rundown thus far, RR.

As for SKC, it's really been a story about 2 signings that have revolutionized the team. First and foremost, they signed Barca B player Ilie at DMid. No words can explain how perfect he is for SKC. A true pivot in midfield who controls the game. Has all the skills for the MLS. The guy wanted to play for SKC from the start. Didn't care about the glitz and glamour of NY or LA. Decided SKC plays the closest to how he was trained, and signed up. He's example #1 for proof that MLS scouting is truly horrible oversees. No one went after him. Now he's SKC's best player and wants to stay. He's in line for $$$.

Player #2 is Gerso. Again, from the moment we all saw him run the wing, SKC fans knew he would offer something drastically missing the last couple years. He's speed on the wing and dangerous with the ball. Not the world's best finisher, but he puts the ball in danger zones and that's what is required of him. Defensively he's underrated. Hustles at all times. True effort guy with attacking tools.

Proved me wrong example #1: Zusi. Honestly thought he'd be a disaster at fullback. Turns out, he's not just serviceable, he's quite good. Paired with Gerso on the right, they are difficult to account for when Zusi pushes up.

Proved me wrong example #2: Besler. Weird to say that, given his reputation. But he looked pretty bad for the last year and a half. I held out hope that it was because he didn't play with a real second center back in 2016. Turned out, that was, indeed, the reason. Besler plays so well with a partner back there, it's like 1+1=3 with him. But this year is different. He's dropping in passes from 40 yards out and leading counters out of the back better than ever before.

There are clear and obvious reasons SKC is leading the west. Everything has come together for them from a roster standpoint. Kudos to management as they will never get the proper amount of credit for the off-season that should be remembered for years.

So, where can they improve? Well, they can't get consistency at left forward. Blessing is trying but he's too small and goes to ground all the time. Maybe that's considered consistency but not the kind we're looking for. He's 20 and if they can put 20 lbs on him, then we'll be talking. At left back, Sinovic is just hanging on. I find it surprising they don't have a better option. Hell, I can't believe someone like Palmer-Brown couldn't offer something similar, even though he's next in line at center half.

There's no way I can give a summary without mentioning the trio of Benny, Ilie and Espinoza. They are just wonderful to watch. True possession midfielders and compliment each other so well. Benny is attack-minded, Espinoza is box-to-box and Ilie on defense. Great to have players with well accepted, perfectly defined roles.

Finally, Melia is proving last year was no fluke. He's in form and as of now, the best keeper in the league. There are guys who have better potential to be better, but they aren't doing the things Melia does night in and night out.

Now is about the time when we get hit with a couple season-ending injuries and the whole thing goes to crap.

RSL is just awful. Only taken the new owner (real estate guy) to run off Kries and the GM make a bad hire at coach who was just fired and run off many of the best players while replacing them retreads.

What was one of the leagues gems has become one of the cellar dwellers

Painful to watch

Very much torn over losing Dom, Besler and Zusi to Gold Cup time. Proud of them, but it'll hurt SKC.

Update time. Looky looky, RSL has made a season out of it. Good to see better play from them. Need some info, RR.

I'm fully convinced that losing Dwyer is not nearly the big deal most make of it. My opinion is that just about any competent target man for SKC will score over 15 goals a year just by association alone. Dwyer braces for Orlando earlier this weekend, and on cue we hear the pro-Dwyer crowd chime in why he's the reason SKC has trouble scoring, not minding the fact it was that way WITH Dwyer. Then lo-and-behold, Rubio gets his brace. I could only smile.

Opara and Besler are statistically the best back pairing in the MLS. We have a keeper. Midfield is solid. Gerso, off his shoulder injury seems back in form. We finally have speed on the wings. I like where SKC is at. And they have a bunch of money. Hell, Vermes even played a young signee this weekend.

SKC is built for home and away series. They just need to get out of the knockout stage this year. Or just finish top 2 and things easier on themselves.

Was at the SKC game Saturday night. SKC looked sharp, but NE going down to 10-men early in the match helped quite a bit. I too was wondering what SKC was thinking with selling Dwyer, but the move seems to be paying off. With the matches still in-hand, I don't see why SKC couldn't get into 2nd place, and with a match against Vancouver coming up, could get into 1st.
