LA Dodgers payroll … not their revenue … their payroll is higher than the revenue generated by every major league team except the Yankees, Red Sox and the Cubs.

Its payroll $149M (37%) higher than the 2nd highest payroll.

The Dodgers bought a WS title. They had pitchers who started the playoffs who pitched less than half the season.

Starting four pitchers combined salary was a billion dollars :wow: but the payout so far in the future so they don’t have to pay the huge luxury penalty now. Baseball payroll is definitely broken.

That looks like complete parity compared to college football.

Most of MLB is just playing exhibition ball, and making a whole lot of money doing it. The top quality teams are not necessarily the most profitable franchises by any stretch.

That is roughly where we are going to land in CFB. Most programs - like Nebraska - will figure out they are far better off financially just being average. Win enough games to keep the stadium full and merch sales up. Or spend triple as much so you can play 2 or 3 more games every few seasons if all the stars line up.

With all of these far-out contracts, NIL, and player compensation, there is a phenomenon of diminishing returns somewhere along the road, and I suspect schools are reaching that reality right about now.

A billion bucks for 4 pitchers. I get the economics of the game (and I was a college baseball player) but I must question how satisfying it is for the players (and owners/management/staff) to win a championship by throwing THAT MUCH MONEY into the equation! Kamela Harris could manage that team to a championship.

Just like any other franchise, MLBs are about making money. The top teams in MLB don't make any money. They spend it all buying championships. The most profitable MLB franchises are those that are in the middle. Not great, but not awful. That keeps the stand full, the merch sales coming in, and it doesn't cost a fortune.

Tell that to the lowly White Sox! ;)
