Mike Gundy

I agree with you. For all the positives Gundy has done for OSU football you think he would get a little more rope than just one bad year. Before Gundy, OSU football was a perennial door mat.
Les Miles wasn't bad, but to your point, Gundy has done far better. I just think he's projecting an attitude in their athletic department that suggests he's just not that into it anymore. For a guy who actually played the game, and remembers that when he did it, it was for the love of the game and program, dealing with spoiled mercs probably isn't sitting too well.

Jimmy Johnson did alright and Jones had some good years. I don’t think OSU has been the doormat of the Big 8/12 at most any point since I’ve followed college football, but they also haven’t dominated at any point.

Not true
They had plenty of good years etc etc. Pat Jones, Jimmy Johnson, Les Miles all had good success. At no point were they a doormat. They were a middle to upper end of the conference most years since the 80s.

Many more terrible seasons, these are just the ones lumped together. Maybe doormat is a strong phrase but, its fitting!

At what no point were they not a doormat? Was it the zero win season or the one win season. Or the eight consecutive seasons they could not get above 4 wins. Doormat is a subjective term. But next thing you know people are going to start telling me KSU has always been a good team.

well in the decade of the 80s, their average finish in the Big 8 was 4th. That would not make them a doormat in the 80s.

In the 3 years before Gundy took over, they had 8, 9, and 7 wins before he was hired. He hardly came into a doormat situation with those kind of seasons before he was hired.
They spent quite a few years in the 80s in the top 25. Had a heisman winner.

I get your overall point, but in a conference with Iowa ST and Kansas and KSU...............OSU was not a doormat. They were middle of the road with the expection of a rough run under Bob simmons in the 90s

I'm glad we locked up DH before the opening became available.
Was Okie St's problem, offense, defense, all of the above?

Didn't watch much college football this year, but from what I saw, the team was giving half effort. Reminded me a whole bunch of Frost's last year at DONU. Unless Gundy starts drinking a couple of energy drinks per day, I think he's out a year from now. I just don't think he cares anymore. OSU has plenty of resources to continue to be successful, so they will be OK in the end.

Appreciate the information!

If Gundy gets his fire back, he’s one of the best coaches out there. This year? No. Last year? No. He doesn’t like the NIL. He isn’t against kids getting some money, but he does not like this setup, or the open portal. Frankly, I don’t blame him. I agree. Problem is, he’s making 7.75 m to care, or, was. He’s really been on cruise control up there for 5+ years. He hasn’t really had anyone overseeing him. The AD has less power, or, did before this meeting. The President of OSU, she loves him.

He tried to be smarter than everyone 3 years ago, hiring Bryan Nardo, from Gannon University, to be his DC. It’s been a complete disaster. All 3 years in the 100’s in total D, including the nations worst this year, giving up 500 ypg. I’ve always wondered what Gundy could do with an Ohio State type of roster. He’d absolutely kill it. He routinely makes gourmet chicken salad, out of grade D chicken (insert bad word here). Not this year. It all caught up. Right now, they literally have NO TALENT. He’s got his work cut out to turn this around. How long he stays at OSU? I don’t know, but I’d bet sooner than later he leaves, one way or another. In fact, if I was North Carolina, I’d call him yesterday. He is ripe to be picked now, and someone would get a helluva coach. Purdue should have called him. He’s still only 57.

Okie State was never as bad as Kansas State. You might only have a few years when Vince Gibson was successful at KSU where they were better that OSU. Doormat is not a subjective term either.

I think the key thing about Mike Gundy is he is the first on this list who was an OSU alum who had very strong success at OSU and was least likely to use OSU as a stepping stone to a "better" job. Throw in Boone Pickens' generosity (and a strong period in the oil and gas industry) and OSU had plenty of money to compete with many other top schools. Yeah, others were richer, but not to the degree they were historically.

Part of the seeming low win percentages by Jimmy Johnson is due to building the program. Pat Jones inherited a very strong team and was able to run it out a long time, but he was never the level of coach that JJ, Miles and Gundy are. Bob Simmons was also hampered by health issues (kidney failure), inheriting the end of Pat Jones' tenure and he may have not been head coach material despite the support of Bill McCartney (McCartney wanted Simmons to succeed him as the HC job at Colorado).

Gundy is (was?) also a very good judge and developer of talent and offensive mind. To the extent he has become disengaged, those things happen and coaches do burn out. Hopefully, he gets his mojo back. I have always liked him a coach (and a player) and would like to see him do well.
