Christopulos Named 2023 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year - University of Nebraska

Taylor Christopulos was named the 2023 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, announced the conference on Tuesday afternoon.

"Christopulos who earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolades in 2021, finished the regular season ranked first nationally in the all-around (83.25), second on vault (14.85) and fifth on floor (14.65). The junior has tallied 12 individual event titles this season, including three all-around titles. He was named National Gymnast of the Week twice this season by the College Gymnastics Association (Feb. 8, Feb. 22). Christopulos was also named to the U.S. Senior National Team in February, the first Husker named to the national team since 1998. "

The 2023 Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships will be held on March 31-April 1 in Columbus, Ohio. Both days of competition will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT.

The University of Nebraska is one of the most tradition-rich programs in men's gymnastics. The Huskers have captured eight NCAA team championships, while earning seven more NCAA runner-up finishes in school history. NU won national titles in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1988, 1990 and 1994.

Only 17 programs in history have won NCAA men's gymnastics titles, and Nebraska is one of only four schools in the nation to win more than six crowns. Since 1980, the Huskers are second the nation with an amazing seven NCAA team championships, including an astounding five straight titles from 1979 through 1983. Only Oklahoma has more, with its eight titles.

"Taylor Christopulos, a native of Layton, Utah, was named a regular-season All-American on floor and in the all-around, and received vault All-America honors for the third consecutive year. Christopulos is ranked first in the NCAA in the all-around (81.733 four-score average), second on vault (14.767 four-score average), and fifth on floor (14.400 four-score average). The captain has pocketed 12 individual event titles this season, including three all-around titles. The junior was also named to the U.S. Senior National Team in February, the first Husker to make the team since 1998.

Chris Hiser, a native of Longmeadow, Mass., was also named a regular-season All-American on still rings. The 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year is ranked ninth in the nation on still rings, with a national qualifying four-score average of 14.083. The junior has collected three titles on the event this season, putting up a personal-best score of 14.30 against Oklahoma and Simpson on February 17.

Cooper Giles, a native of Lake Zurich, Ill., was named a regular-season All-American on pommel horse. The junior is ranked sixth overall in the NCAA with a national qualifying four-score average of 14.183. The junior has collected four event titles this season, notching a personal-best score of 14.50 against Oklahoma and Simpson on February 17.

Donte McKinney, a native of Fort Bragg, N.C., earned his third consecutive high bar All-America honor as well as honors on vault. The senior is ranked first on vault with a national qualifying four-score average of 14.783. McKinney has collected four event titles, with a career-high score of 14.80 put up against both Oklahoma and Simpson on February 17 as well as at Illinois on March 12. On high bar, McKinney is ranked second in the NCAA with a national qualifying four-score average of 14.167. The senior has collected three event titles this season on the event with a personal-best score of 14.25 against Oklahoma and Simpson on February 17.

Zac Tiderman, a native of Wilsonville, Ore., was named a regular-season All-American on high bar. Tiderman is ranked third in the NCAA with a national qualifying four-score average of 14.133. The junior has collected four event titles this season, scoring his personal-best of 14.35 against Illinois on March 12."

Christopulos, the 2023 NCAA all-around silver medalist, will compete on Friday, May 26, in the all-around competition. Individual event champions will also be crowned at the completion of day one. Competition is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT). Team USA will compete in Team Finals on Sunday, May 28, beginning at 10:30 a.m. (CT).

Christopulos helped Team USA to a 247.499 team score, finishing nearly 10 points ahead of second-place Canada, who scored a 238.599 overall.

The junior finished with the highest vault score (14.333) for Team USA, while adding scores on pommel horse (13.400), rings (13.400) and high bar (11.000). "

The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team swept the conference accolades this week, as Taylor Christopulos, Chase Mondi and "named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, Mondi earned his second Big Ten Freshman award, and Zac Tiderman collected Big Ten Specialist accolades, announced by the conference Monday afternoon.

Christopulos’ accomplishments feature an impressive performance on floor, earning him the event title and registering a new career-high score of 14.75 on the event, only .10 below the Nebraska individual record set in 2017 by former Husker Austin Epperson. Christopulos also helped the squad set a new season-best team score on the floor exercise (70.800), beating out last season's record. The captain also competed on pommel horse where he put up a 13.20. On vault, the Layton, Utah native, collected a new season-best of 14.85, taking second place overall and helped the Big Red secure a new season-best team score on vault.

Mondi had a stand out performance where he competed on floor and secured a 13.80, just one-tenth below his career-best and good for sixth place. The freshman helped the Huskers earn a season-best team score on the floor exercise (70.800), surpassing last season's mark. On vault, the freshman notably made a historic impact after setting a new career-best (14.85) and completing a Kaz double full on vault, being the first Husker to complete this skill on vault in Nebraska school history. Mondi tied teammate Christopulos for a strong second-place finish and helped NU set a season-best team score on vault (72.300).

"Freshman Chase Mondi, the first Husker ever to perform the Kaz double full vaulting was an amazing feat," Head Coach Chuck Chmelka said. "There’s only a handful of people in the world doing this vault and we’re fortunate to have one of those guys and he’s only a freshman."

Tiderman highlighted his craft after setting another historic, record-breaking performance by breaking a Nebraska school record on high bar after scoring a new career-best 14.65, good for the event title. The record was previously set by Anton Stephenson in 2018 with a 14.60. The Wilsonville, Ore., native helped the Huskers set a new season-best team score on high bar (70.100), surpassing the Huskers’ previous top score in 2023. Tiderman also impressed on vault after registering a 14.75, good for fourth overall. "

"The No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers were named Regular-Season Big Ten Champions for the first time in program history since entering the Big Ten in 2011 after taking the win against No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (418.200-414.150). Nebraska shares the conference champions title with Illinois, both earning a 3-1 record in the conference regular-season competition. This win for the Huskers ranks as a top-three overall team score in Nebraska program history (418.200), not far behind the top-two team scores, previously set back in 2017.

The Huskers collected a total of 19 personal-best scores this afternoon, along with setting a new program record-high team score on pommel horse (71.70). Two Huskers walked away as event titlests, including Luke James with a personal record on floor (14.75) and Sam Phillips with a personal record on high bar (14.30)."

The Huskers performance was highlighted by five Huskers who were named All-Americans after garnering a total of 10 All-America Honors. Taylor Christopulos finished in second place on floor (14.50), fourth on vault (15.00), third on high bar (13.90) and sixth in the all-around (81.933).
