I don’t see an individual thread about him, so I’ll put this here. I was moved to a few tears when I read George Darlington passed away. When I was a little kid in the early/mid 80s, he and my uncle knew each other. So Coach Darlington gave me and my Dad a tour of the Husker football facilities. There are a few memories I have from that tour I’ll always cherish, and the man was a great coach!
Coach Darlington couldn’t have been a nicer person. On the tour he even showed me and my Dad where Husker players took Stridex pad baths lol. This tour was back in the old days before the horseshoe got encased. If I recall correctly, it was just nailed up. My Dad held me up, and I got to slap the horseshoe in the tunnel at Memorial Stadium. (Also, maybe it’s a faulty memory, but the horseshoe they’ve got up in the tunnel now seems a lot bigger!)
I also might have met the Bobfather on that tour. I know I met him when I was a kid, I just can’t remember if Coach Darlington introduced me to him, or if I met him because one of my grandfathers knew him. (My grandfather Al Schwindt founded Midtown Body and Paint in 1950. I believe he fixed Bob’s car after an accident at least once.)

I believe that most people are endeared to anyone who decides to do the "right thing", even in a losing effort. And going for 2 in 1984 was the right thing. Go for the win, and don't put an asterisk on the national championship.
I remember that night very well. It didn't occur to me at the time that going for a tie was even an option.
It also took several hours for me to calm down enough to go to sleep that night.
I was at that game. After it was over one of the Miami players stood in front of the side that was mostly NU fans and taunted us with gestures, yelling and waiving the weather hurricane warning flag. Typically poor sportsmanship you see from MU!!
