Yup. You might be on alert deep in your own end of the field for a block late in an game with a big leaad. Especially when Iowa has everyone except the water boy in the box Maybe call a timeout to get on the same page?

There isn't an incoming OC worth their salt who will want Smothers to be QB with their butt on the line. I'd bet the farm on a transfer coming in to run the offense if AM doesn't come back (and maybe even IF AM comes back). Smothers does not have the arm to scare defenses. At best, he's a slightly-better-than-McCaffrey passer who can get some intermediate hits off play-action.
You need a guy who can run "good enough" and really sling the rock when needed--deep and to the sidelines with authority.

Couldn’t of said it better. Smothers looked so good in the first half because Iowa had no film on him. Once they saw what we were trying to do with him running the show they made adjustments that any team would. Gave me a McCaffrey type vibe as in “show us you can throw the ball accurately downfield”. We win this game with Martinez in my opinion

Yup, fire the coach and pay the full buyout. Settle for whomever is willing to take the job. Has it really been that long ago that everyone forgot that is how we ended up with Mike Reilly? We fired a coach and then went weeks without anyone being interested in the job so we get whatever dead fish washes up on shore. Seems like a solid business decision.
FWIW, I hate losing just as much as the next person. I also don't want to pay coaches not to coach and still have a coach that is not taking us anywhere. Nebraska has been in this black hole for over a decade now.
Frost has been intent all year on using a dropback passing game as a core attack . . . without a dropback passer on the roster. And with a line that can't really pass block. Pretty lethal combo.

Frost overreacted and went pass heavy just as soon as Iowa closed the gap. He would have done the same with AM. And I've seen Martinez crumble many times in this same type of scenario.
Also, AM hasn't been able to run effectively for a month. Heck, many our most positive plays in the first half or so were when Smothers had some nice runs -- when Frost was still committed to running.
I'll bet Frost went more run heavy in the first half with Smothers than he would have with Martinez. Yet, our offensive was actually as effective as it's been all season when we were committed to the run -- but Frost bails on that so easily...too easily.
If AM had played, I doubt we'd ever gone up 15 -- because Frost would have passed more from the start.
