Rutgers Runs Past Nebraska in Second Half

A series of runs cost the Nebraska men’s basketball team Monday night in a 76-69 road loss at Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights strung together four runs of 8-0 or greater, including scoring eight straight points after Nebraska had tied the game at 67 with 2:02 to play. Nebraska (13-6 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) led by as many as 13 in the first half and eight in the second half, but every time the Huskers tried to pull away, Rutgers (9-9, 2-6) responded.

In the first half, the Scarlet Knights had an 8-0 run to erase a six-point deficit and a 15-0 run to erase a 13-point Husker lead. During those two runs, Rutgers outscored Nebraska 23-0 in a span of just 3:45. Then in the second half, an 8-0 Rutgers run wiped out an eight-point Nebraska lead, and the Scarlet Knights used a 7-0 run to erase a one-point deficit and take the lead for good with less than 10 minutes to play.

James Palmer Jr. led Nebraska with 22 points before fouling out. Isaac Copeland Jr. added 16 points and eight rebounds, but he was held to just two points in the second half. Glynn Watson Jr. chipped in 14 points for a Nebraska team that shot just 41.7 percent from the field, including hitting only 10-of-28 shots in the second half. The Huskers were also just 10-of-18 from the free-throw line on the game. .

The first half featured big runs for both teams. The Huskers used 9-0 and 13-2 runs to lead by as many as 13. Rutgers responded with a 15-0 run to take a late lead before Nebraska scored the final seven points of the half to head to the locker room with a 38-33 advantage. Copeland had 14 first-half points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Palmer added 10 points.

The Huskers (13-5, 3-4 Big Ten) put together a strong defensive effort, but could not get the shots to drop in a 70-64 loss to No. 6 Michigan State last Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Nebraska held the Spartans to their second-lowest point total (70) and field goal percentage (.436) of the season to stay in the contest, but NU shot a season-low 33 percent from the floor, including just 5-of-26 from 3-point range. The loss snapped Nebraska's 20-game home winning streak and just the Huskers' second home loss in the last two seasons. James Palmer Jr. had a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds against the Spartans to pace the Big Red.

SCOUTING RUTGERS

The Scarlet Knights are 8-9 on the season and looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Rutgers opened the year with a 5-1 record, including a win over Miami in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, before dropping four straight. Rutgers has played a challenging Big Ten slate, facing MSU, Wisconsin, Maryland and Ohio State in its first four Big Ten games. RU upset the Buckeyes, 64-61, but lost Eugene Omoruyi to an injury. He leads Rutgers in both scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) and his status has not been determined for Monday's game. Since his injury, the team has lost three straight contests.

The Scarlet Knights feature a young lineup with two freshmen currently starting. Sophomore Geo Baker is averaging 12.9 ppg and is among the Big Ten leaders at 4.4 apg, while freshman Montez Mathis is averaging 7.8 ppg, including 14.8 ppg over the last four games.

Some 'Skinny' from another site:

The Skinny: This is one of those games against a not-so-great opponent in Rutgers without one of their best players where you wonder if Nebraska shows up which is probably what happened to Ohio St at the RAC a few weeks back. If you want to take a silver lining from the Michigan St loss it should be motivated to win.

Offensively there are lots of places to attack this Rutgers defense that has been gouged during conference play. If you recall Isaiah Roby abusing Lamar Stevens trying to guard him on the perimeter, Rutgers rolls out two guys like this who have to guard both Copeland and Roby. If either is hitting Nebraska should have enough offense in this game. Also add on James Palmer probably able to draw contact when he needs/wants to and we haven't even mentioned Watson/Allen. For a team as desperate for offense as Rutgers there will be offensive rebound opportunities if Nebraska wants to hunt for them.

Defensively it will be about securing rebounds as throwing the ball in the general direction of the rim and grabbing the rebound isn't that far off describing Rutger's offense. Nebraska will let Geo Baker try and beat them by himself and while Baker is good he's no Cassius Winston. How much will Amir Harris be called upon to help here? Chris Basnett had a nice article about the recovering Harris today

If Nebraska shows up on one side of the ball, that should be enough. If they don't show up at all, this could be one of the biggest upset wins of the Pikiell era.

Player to watch: Geo Baker
The 6'4" soph guard has emerged as the team's goto player, especially with F Eugene Omoruyi out indefinitely with a dislocated kneecap. Unfortunately for the Knights Baker doesn't get to the line much as is quite an inefficient scorer so it's probably better just to make him beat you by himself. Does Thomas Allen draw Baker? Probably not because him guarding Montez Mathis makes more sense. He's started to prove himself as one of Nebraska's better defenders.

With Omoruyi out Ron Harper Jr slides in at the SF position. Rutgers almost always has a traditional center on the court and at times a traditional PF.
Ron Harper Jr is having a miserable year shooting but defensively challenges shots with his length. He's also foul prone so Palmer should attack anytime he's covered by the son of former NBA player Ron Harper
