Isaac Copeland scored a season-high 24 points, but it was not enough as No. 24 Nebraska lost a battle of top-25 teams Sunday night, falling to No. 25 Iowa, 93-84, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Nebraska dropped to 11-4 on the season and 1-3 in the Big Ten after losing back-to-back games for the first time this season. Iowa (12-3, 1-3 Big Ten) picked up its first conference victory by scoring 93 points, the most Nebraska has allowed this season.

The 3-point line was a major factor, as Iowa made six more threes than the Huskers. Nebraska hit two of its first four 3-pointers but missed 17 of its final 19 attempts, connecting on just 4-of-23 from beyond the arc on the game. While the Huskers struggled to find their range, Iowa was 10-of-22 from the 3-point line, in addition to going 29-of-32 at the free-throw line. Nebraska made three more field goals and had five fewer turnovers than Iowa, but Iowa out-rebounded Nebraska by nine.

Copeland scored his 24 points in only 30 minutes, and he added six rebounds. James Palmer Jr. added 20 points and four assists, while Isaiah Roby hit 8-of-10 shots from the floor to finish with 17 points and nine rebounds. Thomas Allen rounded out the quartet of Huskers in double figures with 10 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team returns to the road for the second time this week, as the No. 24/23 Huskers travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for a matchup with the No. 25/20 Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Huskers (11-3, 1-2 Big Ten) look to rebound following a tough 74-72 loss at Maryland on Wednesday. Jalen Smith's basket with 3.8 seconds left was the difference in a game that saw nine lead changes and 11 ties. In the loss, James Palmer Jr. led the Huskers with 26 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists to pace three Huskers in double figures. Palmer has been on a tear as of late with four 20-point efforts in his last five games for the Huskers dating back to Dec. 8.

For the Huskers, who are ranked 24th in this week's AP poll, Sunday's game with the No. 25 Hawkeyes will mark the first time that both teams were ranked at game time. In addition, it has been 16 years since NU played a game as a ranked team against another ranked foe.

SCOUTING IOWA
Iowa is 11-3 on the season following an 86-70 loss at Purdue (Junior forward Tyler Cook led Iowa with 24 points and six rebounds, while Isaiah Moss and Ryan Kriener added 13 and 10 points). The Hawkeyes won their first six games, including neutral-site wins over Oregon and UConn, before opening conference play with losses to nationally ranked Wisconsin and at Michigan State.

The Hawkeyes' strength is an offensive attack that is shooting 47 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range to rank second in the Big Ten in scoring at 82.2 points per game. Iowa is among the nation's best at getting to the foul line, as they make an average of nearly 22 free throws per game while ranking second in the conference in free throw percentage (.746).

The Hawkeyes are one of the most experienced teams in college basketball, as they returned all five starters from a year ago. Junior forward Tyler Cook has been the Hawkeyes primary threat, as he paces the squad in scoring (17.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg). The Hawkeyes have been without starting center Luka Garza for the last three games (12.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg), but he could return to Sunday's game.

In the backcourt, two-year starters Jordan Bohannon (10.4 ppg, 30 3-pointers) and Isaiah Moss (8.9 ppg) are joined by freshman Joe Weiskamp, who is averaging 11.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

This game is shaping up to be another shoot-out/nail-biter (Where Are my Heart Pills :Cautious:). After their loss @ Purdue, Iowa Needs it more than we do and it's at their house. But I think Nebraska Wants it more.

Player to watch: Tyler Cook
The 6'9" 250 Cook is an absolute beast and in last year's loss to Nebraska put up 24 pts and 10 rebounds at the PBA. With Luka Garza questionable to play and a majority of their post players out for the year Cook tends to play less aggressively in the first half or if he's anywhere close to being in foul trouble. Cook is typically good at playing without picking up fouls and is also an excellent passer out of the post. He's not a 3pt threat.

Player to watch: Luka Garza
Garza is the starting center on the team but has been out for the last 3 games due to an ankle injury. When healthy he's one of the most aggressive scorers for Iowa and is capable of making 3s. It's a big deal if he can't play against a Nebraska team that can be hurt by traditional centers.

Iowa has one of the taller rosters in Div 1 as Bohannon is the only player under 6'5"
  • Former walk-on Baer has been filling in at the 4. While undersized and the 5th scoring option he's efficient and sneaky shot blocker
  • PG Bohannon has struggled with his 3pt shot this year and at points is a defensive liability. He's platooning with the coach's son Connor who really doesn't shoot 3s but draws a lot of fouls with his 6'5" length.
  • Moss is capable of shouldering a decent amount of the scoring load. His backup Maishe Dailey has struggle to score this year.
  • Wieskamp is one of the most efficient scorers from anywhere on the court and Palmer will have his hands full keeping track of him.
  • 6'9" 255 Ryan Kriener is Iowa's version of Tanner Borchardt
The Skinny: After Iowa was absolutely rolled by Purdue, the Huskers find themselves favored heading into Iowa City in a game where both teams will be highly motivated to win. As tempting as it is to look at the lopsided loses vs Michigan St and Purdue and chalk this game up as a win, this Iowa team will play better at home like they've shown in a win vs Iowa St.

Like most McCaffery teams, this Iowa team doesn't foul a lot. Unlike most Iowa teams, this one currently leads Div 1 in FTA/FGA and thus a lot of their points are coming at the FT line. Nebraska has done a good job at not fouling this year but whomever is guarding Cook will be especially vulnerable. Iowa's rebounding ability is also a concern as teams have been abusing the Huskers on the offensive boards all year. Look for Nebraska to keep more bodies back to rebound at points against an Iowa defense that will break down in the half court. Speaking of slowing down you'll see Iowa throw a lot of zone at Nebraska including a 1-2-2 after made buckets.

Nebraska has responded well after each of their losses with blowout wins at home so expect Nebraska to be highly motivated today. Is Garza going to play? His size and skill set are a difference maker. Look for Nebraska to bounce back in a close one.

My wife is an Iowa grad and we watch most of each team's games. I'd say Iowa is overrated (athough inconsistent and can go from very good to disastrous from game to game). Nebraska seems to be underrated by the national media.

We need to show we can with this type of close road game.

Ended up not going to the game due to family activities.

Mixed signals on Garza. Reports that he is practicing, other reports that he won't play. Latest I heard was that Garza would not get the start, but may play off the bench.
