Material being thrown on field by fans

This all started at, no surprise, Texas. Fans didn't like an official's call, so they fumed, boo'd, and tossed things onto the field until the officials overturned the call. Sure, Texas got fined $250K. That's like ashtray change to UT. Doesn't matter. They got the call they wanted.

Some History:

They hide them in their undergarments? The holes are a giveaway as to which ones were thrown by males.

I believe if you are caught throwing anything on the field you should be banned from the stadium. No excuse for that kind of behavior.
If it comes close to a player, maybe even arrested for assault. (The exception may be the UTST throwing tortillas. not sure anyone has ever been hurt by a drive by tortilla)

At the BYU-Utah game a Cheer coach was knocked out by a bottle thrown by a fan (?Utah).

IMHO the Conferences leadership has to make immediate action across college football to stop this insanity.

My recommendation:
First time at any game:
-30 yard penalty an clearing of the stands where this occurred (See CU/NU game).
-further throwing of material on the field at same game: Forfeit the game.

I strongly feel that only such severe penalties will stop this behavior.

The selling of alcohol at game venues increases the likelihood of extreme fan behavior thus the conferences need to be ready to deal with the behavior in advance by making clear what endangering on field participants will result in.

OOps, forgot to post the link to BYU story:

A lot of this comes down to policing one vs. a large group. It's the same reason why it is difficult to prevent field storming. Yes, you can run down and arrest one person who runs out onto a field. It's impossible to do it when 80-100k fans are doing it.

Same with thrown items. I'm not a fan of punishing a football team for the actions of their fans. I think schools should have a zero tolerance policy with throwing stuff on the field. Kick out anyone they catch doing it, press charges, ban them from coming back. I'd also look at selling drinks in cups, rather than bottles.

In the end, you can prevent stupid. College sports have a lot of college kids, who do a lot of stupid things. There are also a lot of stupid adults, who do stupid things.
