I think back to quarterbacks such as Bernie Kosar with his funky side armed delivery. He won a championship. Think back to Frost who always looked like he was still throwing the shot put. He won a title. Young at Texas wasn't Joe Namath, yet he won a championship. It's about running an offense that suits the quarterback. Not full scale changing of the offense, but leaning on the plays and schemes within your offense that's plays on your quarterbacks strengths. Martinez still has two seasons to refine and polish his game. He wasn't done any favors by the coaches changing yearly as well as the playbook. Payton Manning never won a national title. He was beat by an option quarterback as I recall that had an only fair passing percentage. But what that quarterback did, he did very well.

The list of "unconventional throwers" is endless...Tebow did alright too.

You are exactly right, the QB is 1/11th of the offensive attack. A central 1/11th, but without the supporting cast, he's limited.

Many qb's don't flourish until their 2nd or 3rd year running the same offense.

And, after all this continual downgrading, hand-wringing and complaining, he is still our best QB, our starter, and will own the QB record books at NU by the time he's done.

People need to lay off and let the kid play. Continually gritching about him serves ZERO purpose.

Agree with every sentence but the last one. Apparently the continual bitching does serve a purpose for some. Takes all kinds...

Well, that closes the book on this thread. FLAS has spoken! Opinions and constructive criticism is no longer necessary or needed. On your way out, please leave your Husker fan membership card at the door if you don't think TM is a great QB.

So, what's the point of continually running this kid down? It's completely counterproductive. If you feel you must degrade our players continually, then why are you here?

I'm not "degrading" our player(s). I don't subscribe to the idea he is a great, if even good QB. I think he is a great athlete, but I don't think he will deliver a Big 10 Championship now or ever. It's my opinion. I have said that I hope I am wrong, but my opinion stands. I respects those who think he will deliver this year. I just happen to disagree. I'm not calling him names or saying he sucks, just that I think he doesn't have the tools to be a "great" QB at this level.

Why am I here? To offer my opinion, just like you. Sorry FLAS, old buddy, but I just paid for 2 more years to post my opinion.

Also, I doubt TM would ever read a BBS or care what we have to say, so "running him down" is of zero consequence. But if TM picks up a paper, watches ESPN, turns on a radio, etc. he is bound to hear a lot worse than what I am saying on a BBS. He's not a "kid". He's a young man playing QB at NU and that carries a lot of responsibility. If he doesn't have the skin to take some barbs about his ability, he should go play safety at Chadron State.

You call them excuses. I call it reality. When we had continuity with the playbook and the staff we were consistently good to one degree or another. When we transitioned almost every season and the staffs were learning along with the young players we have struggled. That sucked.

When we use to never play a kid before he was ready we again were more consistent. Since we play underclassmen as starters and learn on the job we have struggled. Excuses maybe to some, but it been reality to me. It has sucked.

I can see several starters in the record books with some poor percentages as passers. Reality. When we count all the passes dropped that were catchable his numbers change. Reality.

I won't argue his first two seasons were disappointing. His mechanics should have been addressed in his red shirt season. He should have never been a starter as a red shirt frosh. The coaches should have never scrubbed the walkon quarterbacks as inferior and found one that could manage. Goes back to the continuity of staff and playbook. Goes back to throwing out the baby with the bathwater, in that what had worked for Nebraska was scrubbed even before Pelini. It took him a while to figure it out.

I agree with you in that time will tell. Maybe he never shakes his lack of pocket presence. It is hard to teach an old dog tricks he should have learned years before. It is what it is. A combination of mistakes over a decade. He will be better. How much is up to him. He needs to be the manager of this more mature and talented offense. Maybe you disagree but that's my take on the situation. It about looking to the future and righting wrongs. Finding what was lost in the many transitions. You linger on the past and you create a climate of failure. You correct the obvious and you move forward.

Martinez will probably play in the NFL....it wont be as a qb. Even with his limits, i still think we can win the B1G this season.

again the ole why are you here type question because some may have a differing opinion.

Is it degrading to say TM has a very hard time going through his progressions...One look and done. or is it at least true in part?
To say he has a awkward throwing motion, that is degrading as well or at least true in part
To say TM can really work on his footwork which in turn would make him a better passer...Does that at least have some truth to it

When you have TM taking QB coaching from the likes of Steve Calhoun in southern Cal...was it because he was doing so well or because maybe just maybe TM realized he needed work.

maybe its time for Neb to get a position coach at QB. ...then maybe folk dont mind losing recruits such as Bailey and will just continue to hope for a good roll of the dice with the TM type recruits. Some pan out as we have all seen ...other goe by the way of...if only.

To say the continued degrading of a player may look like it to those with high hopes....but then history as we have also seen has a way of repeating itself.

I for one hope the kid lights it up and I have to come on here to eat my words...as those that know me and that happens I will come back as say how wrong I was.
Until that happens I think we should all be able to give a opinion other that...TM is the 2nd coming of ______ At this point TM needs to step it up before we all start saying....well he should improve ...next year.

Peace

T Martinez will NEVER have the accuracy of the qb's listed above.

Statman i am not a fair weather fan, we are knowledgeable fans who knows great qb'ing.

So you think Keller, Taylor and Ganz were great QB's? Really?

OK Pops, bring that guy in and suit him up! Oh wait...Martinez is here...and he's the best we have. :)

Taylor should do a lot better this year given the amount of internet coaching he's getting.

Actually, the pressure from the internet and national media may have caused the coaches to re-think last year's position of "we don't care how he get the ball there." This year, evidently, they decided to earn their pay and coach him (although I heard it was a California coach that TM hired to coach him this summer that helped with the foot work....not sure if that is true or not).

we wouldn't have to do it on the internet if the team itself was concerned and would hire a coach.

and again I love the eye rolls with any opinion other than TM is the 2nd coming of______ fill in blank

yes it was Steve Calhoun, Keith Price from the WAC and Cody Fajardo of nevada....would be nice to see some effort from the team to show they may be concerned...then they may not be and they are buying into what they are also reading that most QBs breakout year is either the 3rd or 4th year in the same system

Yep, you are right. Doesn't look like our coaching staff was involved at all...this was an intiative that others took and TM bought into. Good for him, get the coaching you need where ever you can find it.
