Steve Gribble and my family became really good friends with what started out as an advertising inquiry. Steve wanted to advertise his fishing resort in Minnesota on the website and that was the beginning of a friendship that lasted for almost 20 years. I started taking my family to his resort starting around 2005 and some years made it up there twice, once in the summer and between home games in the fall. All the fish I have mounted on the wall in my Husker room are from Marion Lake. Here's one of them. Our granddaughter Julie caught these when she was six years old. Not one but two record size Pumpkin Seed fish that Steve had mounted and put on the "grand slam" wall in the resort of all the biggest fish of each variety in the lake. When someone catches a bigger one he gives the wall mount to the previous winner. It stayed on the wall for several years.
Steve was the ultimate Husker fan having grown up in Nebraska and played football at Midland College. We attended bowl games in Florida together. The resort is full of Husker memorabilia and the main cabin is named the Husker Cabin. Steve's main career before buying the fishing resort was being a lawyer and doing estate law in Florida. No matter where he was there was always time for fishing. Here he is on the left pointing to where he is going with his favorite fishing buddy Neil. It was a joy to fish with the two of them and their constant banter back and forth about who was the better fisherman.
Steve fell and broke his hip a few months ago and was recovering nicely when his appendix burst last week and he had emergency surgery. He was unable to recover after surgery and succumbed yesterday, 7/23/2022. Sincere condolences from the Max family to his wife Lynn, son Kyle and daughter Michel Le.
RIP Steve and save a spot for me up there so we can catch our limit together again. Here's Steve with the Californians for Nebraska hat that he got when he came out for the USC game in 2006. More pictures are on the Cozy Cove Facebook page.
