Yeah, I feel like we're wandering in the desert, looking for the promised land, without the manna from heaven. The worst part if it is, I've adjusted and accepted it. I gave up my season tickets last year, after nineteen years. Lots of reasons but mostly because it just wasn't fun anymore.
When I was a kid, in the early '70s, my dad had tickets high up in the north stadium. During one game, when we were ranked #1, he looked down at me and said, "That's the best team in the country." I was proud to be a part of it. No real reason for me to be proud, I had contributed squat to their success, but I was only 11 or 12 years old.
Frankly, I've lost that pride, probably for good. In the last ten seasons, the best we've done in the Big Ten is tie for 2nd place in the West division, in 2016. With Iowa. Because they gob-smacked us in Iowa City, 10-40. That was the last year we've had a winning conference record. Ten years!
Other than that one "glorious" year, the best we've done in conference was Rhule's first year. We tied for 4th in the Big Ten West, with a 3-6 conference record. With 3 other teams. Which put us tied for last place. If they had combined divisions that year, only Indiana and Michigan State did worse.
But the soft loss of old geezers like me means little compared to the disinterest by the younger generations. They may know our history, but they don't feel it. "National Championships? You're kidding, right?" Kids today aren't that different than I was, when I got to see "the best team in the country." They take pride in being associated with a winner. Sad to say, NU hasn't been a winner in a long time.
[Edit: Correction: last year we tied for 10th in the conference (with Northwestern) with a 4-5 record. So, last year was our 2nd best conference record in the last ten years. 4-5. Sorry.]
