Last time we started 5-0?

2016. A decade ago.

In Mike Riley's second year we rattled off 7 straight wins to open the year before eventually finishing 9-4.

That included a win over #20 Oregon, but losses to #11 Wisconsin, #6 Ohio State, (UR) Iowa, and #21 Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

We’ll get to see what NU is made of the next two weeks. If we’re honest, NU should be 5-0. They’ve played 5 bad teams. Anything less than where they are and it’s not good. Indiana is coming to town. A real shot. They will be infinitely better than anything Nebraska has seen. 16 penalties will be a death knell. Will need a much cleaner game next week to give yourself a shot.

Indiana will be the best team we've played by far this year, but we're probably the best team they've faced too. We have a chance to pull off the upset. If we don't, and I know moral victories don't count, I just hope we don't get run off our own field.

Should we lose to IU I want to watch a tough close hard fought competitive game. Two years ago it was a total embarrassment getting slaughtered 56-7. IU poured it on in the 4th quarter while leading 42-0 at the end of 3rd quarter! Yes it’s our job to stop them but I believe Cignetti wanted to make a statement and embarrass our program. Sadly he succeed in doing so.

Let's hope Nebraska is up to the challenge of playing a Top 10 team........

NU is 5-0 and defeated every opponent by at least 18 points.

Last time that happened?

1983

Wow.

Last night they said it was 2001 (last time we beat the 1st 5 by 17 points). But I see we beat TCU to open the 2001 season, 21-7 (14 points).

Of course, none of that means anything, especially if we get blown out by the Hoos.

And let's hope we don't get exposed as paper tigers like that 2016 team. That season ended like the embarrassment that was the Riley era. Took our once-Pelini-tough team and turned them Charmin soft.

Here's hoping the 2026 version is a picture of a team that has toughened up. I think we saw some of that yesterday, in a team that got punched in the mouth repeatedly, and not only got back up -- but came back and absolute dominated the 4Q.

Well congrats on some excellent research! Of course your discovery simply solidifies exactly what I think of the Lame-stream media.... not much! :Rolf:

I've said before, this schedule (so far) has set up perfectly for a team that not only is learning how to win, but learning to expect to win, and learning how to deal with winning (which we struggled with early yesterday). Each team was a little tougher than the last (possible exception Ohio > BGSU), and we built confidence as we saw new scenarios along the way.

Maryland has some excellent athletes, far and away better than we've seen previously. But you're right; they're a bad TEAM. Maryland against us yesterday, reminded me of us against Iowa the last several years -- clearly enough talent to win, but all you had to do was persevere through the 4Q and they would fall apart. And that's good experience for us too.

That’s key. I can live with a loss, even the next two weeks, but they need to not get ran off the fields. Expecting NU to be highly competitive in both games is NOT unreasonable in year 4. That said, NU is past due for an upset. It’s long past their turn. Talent level in this game is a push, or slightly lean to NU. The coaching is a mismatch going in. Change the narrative Saturday!

Maryland isn’t a bad team. Better than Michigan State, Rutgers and Purdue.

Washington their QB is improved over last year.

I agree we need a cleaner game against IU.

Who would you want to beat more - Indiana or Oregon? Especially if DR is the QB?

I want both but I will take Indiana. They’ve been pretty poor sports dating back to the Tom Allen (fake injuries game).
