John Butler to be Promoted to DC

It would be great to get Simpson back in to the fold his recruting was really good and he has an inside track with Miami area coaches. FSU in bringing in White and Pot Roast and shuffling the Defensive coaches has changed the dynamic for their recruiting In Florida. No they are not going to get shut out but some long time Faces are gone and new Coaches have to make new inroads in a over recruited state

Some of this isn’t adding up. It’s not butler or it would be announced. Now if it defaults into him that’s a different story. But I’m surprised at the Simpson hire without getting a DC First. What if he finds someone like Dana who wants his own staff?

Im thinking it's either Butler or there is a handshake deal worked out but not released yet due that coaches present duties

I am leaning this way. If it was Bulter that would be immediately announced. The ones I think HCMR would want are on NFL teams and it is exceedingly difficult to get them to negotiate and leave while their teams are in the hunt, if this is the case, it would be a long wait. HCMR could have floated the name to the presumptive DC that agreed to the Simpson hire.

If he ends up hiring Butler, fine. I just want him to do his due diligence and make the best possible hire.

HCMR knows his legacy and tenure is on the line in year 3 and he needs to have the program make the big jump promised in year 3. He is doing his due diligence and I am certain he is willing to wait for the right DC. The good ones I am thinking he is considering are obligated for the moment and the near future. If he hires Butler in the end it is likely that his priority target said no regardless of how well Butler has them playing in the bowl game. All just my humble opinion.

At this point it doesn't really matter how long Rhule wants to take. You have your recruiting class in place, and should have a good handle who is staying and who is going. So as far as players are concerned you should be good to go.

So that really leaves do you hire a DL coach without waiting to see who the DC is, that's what Rhule did last time, and it seems like that might be the case again if Simpson comes. We have to remember Rhule is a defensive guy so he may take more of an interest on who the defensive coaches are versus the offensive coaches.

Plus Butler is around if that's the way Rhule wants to go, and you can let Butler hire the new DB coach after he takes over. Now the thing that might mess this up is if Rhule hires someone else for DC and Butler says it's time to move on. But if that happens you just let the new DC hire the DB coach he wants.

For a coordinator role, I'm assuming there is a little more vetting than just hiring an assistant. Even with Holgorsen there was a pretty decent gap between our obvious interest and the eventual announcement. Contracts take time to negotiate, especially if someone is looking for a 2 or 3 year guarantee.

We didn't run a straight-up 3-3-5 all the time. There were plenty of 4 man fronts and tweaks in games. But Butler did spend a season with White here and he's been a DC before at Penn St. and has plenty of experience to run a defense if he does get the nod.

Besides, there aren't many coaches out there who HAVE run a 3-3-5. It's a pretty small tree. White learned it from Rocky Long. Leonhard mostly ran a 3-4 at Wisky and he's the big name people seem to want. You could argue that Butler might be better positioned to take over something he already has a year with and also knows the personnel.

In reality, most really good DC's could come in and pick up what Rhule wants to do and what we've done. I frankly don't care who it is . . . Rhule will pick a guy he thinks can do what he wants.
These days the base defense is just a bunch of numbers.
