Not sure I understand the reasoning, unless NU is just getting low ball offers and is holding out for something better. In this day and age of CFB, you don't forego free money.

Unfortunately you are correct.
I've pretty much gave up on what used to be college football
They don't want to get stuck in a long term contract that's less than optimal value, then leave millions of $$ on the table when the market explodes next year.
My first thought was, "after we have our championship season this year, there will be a lot more demand for our jersey space"
But it's probably a case where more sponsors need to get on board with the idea of buying patch space.

Indeed. Of course their agents are also telling them, "Look we've agreed your plan is to rack up personal stats as much as you can this year to try to flip to a new team next year. But we need to make sure Nebraska will try to pay top dollar to keep you, as well. Remember, a share of any patch deal really goes to you. So yeah, Go Big Red!"
Sorry, feeling a bit cynical this morning, or maybe just more willing than usual to express it. I don't mean to imply there's anything especially wrong with the player's getting what they can from the gravy train - the schools, coaches, TV, etc, have already been doing that for a long time blah, blah, blah. The arguments are well known by now.

I am losing interest in the sport quickly. I now only watch Nebraska play each weekend.
I agree that player’s should receive additional compensation on top of everything else they get. However, it just seems out of control to the every day sports fan.
I did not get to a game in Lincoln last year but did see the team play in Arrowhead. I am not currently planning on seeing a football game “unless” they play the same day as volleyball.
Volleyball is the bigger draw for me and I would also happen to see a football game. Yes, I know that many of the volleyball players receive substantial NIL payments too.
Hoping some sort of guardrails will be placed soon onto college athletics that are actually followed/adhered to but we know many teams/fanbases will try to get around many of the implemented rules.

Hope so. We already see most of these brands in the background on the fences and tron screen. My gosh, leave it off our players.
For 130 years (give or take), college athletes have struggled to make ends meet, pay rent, buy food etc. (with a few exceptions, see SEC and SWC) while juggling school work with practice obligations. Couldn't even take a free ham sandwich without getting in trouble. Now all of a sudden they're raking in NIL deals that would have made NFL players drool a few years ago.Preparing to leave the huddle for the next play.

Lets make sure we understand we are talking about a small percentage of athletes raking in the deals.
There a bunch of Olympic sport athletes, women athletes, lower division athletes (D2,D3, NAIA, JUCO) that still struggle and juggle school work and practice obligations. I think many times in the desire to say "the athletes are only getting what they should have a long time ago" we forget it isn't all athletes.
Seems like “the patch” is becoming the new dividing line in college football.

It's definitely happening in pro sports, too. NBA added jersey patches a few years ago. NFL added jersey patches to practice uniforms (which is really dumb to me) a couple years ago, as well. Only a matter of time before they come to game jerseys.
All of these are being run like businesses, which is frustrating as a fan, but makes sense from a business standpoint. Why not take advantage of easy things that generate revenue? I don't want jersey patches, but I'm also not the one being offered millions to have them on.
I agree, at some point there is oversaturation that will lead to diminished returns, but it doesn't seem like we're close to hitting that yet. Sports are big business in the US.
No question that major sports are figuring out new ways to monetize their brands. But I don't think the NFL will allow Jerry Jones to bid out for the Cowboys' own patch, for his profit. My understanding is that those types of revenue are shared equally.
