Jaz, Issie, Sam & 2025 WNBA Draft Updates!

I finally relented and rejoined a social media site (IG.) Jaz and Issie are both in the WNBL this year!

Jaz obviously made the most of her opportunity in the semi-pro NBL1 league last year because she's now starting for the Geelong United in the Women's National Basketball League. In 18 games she's averaging 10.2 PPG, 5 Assists and 3.1 Rebounds per game. Issie Bourne is again playing, and starting, for the Adelaide Lightning. In 18 games Issie's averaging 13.3 PPG 3.9 Rebounds and 1.4 Assists.

Sadly, Jaz's team is only 6-13. Issie's team has a new head coach this year and is only 6-12. The two teams played each other back in November, with Geelong winning 72-66. Jaz scored 9 points, including 2-4 from three, tied for the team lead with 4 Assists, and did her best Alexis Markowski impression, grabbing six rebounds (including 4 on defense.) Issie also did her best Alexis Markowski impression, getting a double-double with 10 pts and 10 rebounds. Geelong and Adelaide play again in the lasst game of the regular season on February 16.

I think WNBL games can be streamed online for free in the US and they're broadcast on some cable/satellite channels too. I keep "meaning to" watch games, but the time difference is so large I've never been able to get out of bed in time to watch a game (yet.)

Here's a nice highlight video of Jaz in a game a few weeks ago. She had 20 pts. 7 Assists, 7 Steals and 4 Rebounds that night.

Lastly, Sam Haiby's playing for the Killester Basketball Club in the Irish Women's Super League. Sam scored 16 points in a 76-72 loss to Utility St. St. Paul's yesterday. Video of Sam's games can be watched here: https://ireland.basketball/WomensSuperLeagueFixtures#

Unfortunately, my favorite WNBA team, the Washington Mystics, "failed" in their Tank for Page (Bueckers) attempt last season. However, I'm hopeful they'll do something smart in the 2nd round and draft Markowski. Although, one of the two mock drafts I've seen that goes beyond just the 1st round currently has Lex being drafted #17 by the expansion Golden State Valkyrie. If that happens, I won't be too sad because being taken by an expansion team hopefully will give Lex a better shot at making their regular season roster. For some crazy reason, the other mock draft doesn't include Lex at all. I absolutely can't see her not being drafted.

SWVAHusker, thanks for the update.

Vote for Jaz or Issie for Fan Player of the Year!

We're Husker fans. Winning fan polls for our current and former players, or things like the Big Ten blood drive is kinda "our thing." So lets win this one too!!

Another Jaz update.

Geelong unfortunately lost to the Perth Lynx 95-77 a couple days ago. Jaz led her team with 25 pts. 6 Assists and 3 Rebounds.

If she keeps playing like this, hopefully a WNBA team will give her another opportunity, if she wants it. IMO, the issue for Aussie players like Jaz and Issie is the new WNBA CBA requires players to report to their WNBA team by May 1. If Jaz or Issie's WNBL team ever made the finals, they'd only have a couple weeks to report to their WNBA team. Basically, they'd get very little time off and be trying to make a team as a free agent.

Why would anyone want to play in that cesspool.

With a whopping 69% of the fan vote, Jaz received the People's Choice Award from Geelong fans!

In one of the videos from Geelong's end of the season awards, Jaz said it was nice to be with her teammates "one last time." Not sure if she just meant for the season, or if she's a WNBL free agent when the league season's over.

I have never gotten the opportunity to meet her, but IMO one of the wonderful things about Jaz is she's outgoing and obviously really likes people. When her playing days are done, I think she'd be a great recruiter as an assistant on Amy's staff.
