Jahkeem Green

Oh Frost will say we will play the best who can give us the best chance blah blah blah....then he takes one look at his graduating seniors and becomes strategic. No way Green plays ahead of Darrion or the Davis twins. So if Green's on board with 4 games of back up duty, then so be it. Even if he is one of the better players. Hope there's no bait and switch here.
I really don’t think Frost is the bait and switch type. You’re right Green came in out of shape and we have good players that he wouldn’t currently start over maybe more due to conditioning. With all the hype he’s never had a D1 snap yet right? A little tougher than juco

This guy is the real deal. I think we will see that in four games this year. I wonder how Frost will sell that to him. I hope it's meaningful snaps and not garbage time. He isn't out of shape. He's playing behind seniors. Frost likes Juco's and wants to create a connection to them. He needs to be careful because many programs will sell immediate playing time. Green is ready now. Frost is playing a very sensitive game here. He can't start a guy over his seniors. But he can't offer immediate playing time and not deliver. So he's selling the future. My guess is Green plays against OSU and feels important. My guess is you can tell when he's out there. He'll start next year.

Oh I agree he’s the real deal, just the hype that he’d start day 1 and get drafted after this year was a big expectation for someone adjusting to the D1 game. Word was he came in out of shape, but he’s got to be getting there after a month now. Yeah, that’s a sensitive game I’m glad I don’t have to play. I’m excited to see this guy play. I hope he does the 4 game redshirt since we have 3 seniors and is ok with that plan

Dont think Frost would have thrown out the RS idea without first having run it by Green. By actually bringing it up my guess is they have had the conversation and the plan is to use him in 4 games and have 2 full years left as long as injuries on the DL dont require burning the RS.

Exactly, I can't see Frost commenting on this in the press without him having had that discussion with Green.

While he has to want to play in the NFL (what highly ranked player doesn't want that?), outside of the absolute physical freaks, defensive linemen need to learn a lot about playing the position in order to move to the next level. 2 years of S&C and coaching will turn this guy into a monster, IMO

They really don’t need his help stopping the run. Get him in shape and ready to fill a pass rush specialist roll for 4 important games.

If he is as good as advertised, his ability will be amply demonstrated in those four games. So get him on the field and see how he does.

What are you basing any of this on? You've been to lots of practices?

A possibility here is that he has a conversation that says:
  • 2 options - rotate in this year with somewhat limited snaps based on the quality of the guys here this year and then have at most 1 year to impress the NFL.
  • Or, play in 4 games this year and then have 2 years to showcase your skills being a starter with the majority of snaps.
Seems like a win-win for him and NU.

High school and juco film. Former and current coach quotes. Other individuals here have cited NFL talent in other threads. And yes, some personal insight from a current player who went to high school with my son. I get a lot that I don’t post because it’s inappropriate to do so. But I think it’s ok here to say Green is getting some peer rave reviews.

Part of my post is about seniors and depth chart. Do you feel that Green should start over the Seniors? I’m not saying you'd be wrong, but I don’t think that’s the way Frost works. I also don’t think we see him outside of the 4 games as a backup. To answer your question I’m basing this on opinion. What are your thoughts?

Kids don't want to hear that they should wait.
Kids generally think they're better than they are and better the guys in front of them.

I think another option (ish) is on the table:
  • Play in 4 games, then have all of next year to showcase your NFL skills and if it works out declare early … or have the option to return for another year and work on your skills!

I have no idea. I mean he looked good in film but I'm not an expert and I haven't seen any practices. Lots of people have come in as studs on film and never saw the field.

If the thought process is, he's good but not quite starting good this year, then it makes sense to RS for the next two years. We lose a lot quickly on the DL.

Yep, makes sense. We don’t need him this year, but could probably use the depth quality in our top 4 games, which he should see time in. The obvious conundrum is that if he’s ready to start now, then he won’t because of seniors. But to get him game experience the lesser opponents might be ideal, which are the games we won’t need him in. Who knows.

If he’s the real deal and doesn’t want to redshirt we have a problem, or a policy rather. If he’s not ready or wants to redshirt it’s a no brainer.
