The first two plays were a failure of the safeties to call off the base coverage maybe because they failed to recognize trips. You have to play trips different than conventional two receiver groups. When you hear 'disco' out there, that is an alert for trips and it may be followed up with a new call. Disco merely tells linebackers their current coverage is discontinued for trips and do the trips defense. This is stuff coaches should be teaching all the way down to junior high.

It probably is a communication issue as the author notes. I wouldn't think this hasn't been addressed, because you have to play trips different than other formations. The younger players seem to be the focus of opposing coordinators. They probably are exploiting the younger guys still navigating the learning curve.

No mention in the article about setting edges, gapping over against sweeps, watching for cutbacks, and simply filling holes by linebackers. Those issues seem more common on giving up big gains.
