It’s time for a new baseball coach

What even are the expectations for Nebraska baseball? They have clearly changed since the move to the Big 10. I don’t think anyone really understands what the actual expectations are. Men’s basketball is in the same boat. Those two sports have been stuck in a purgatory of mediocrity for quite some time now. Neither the athletic department or the fan base cares enough to set expectations and hold programs and coaches accountable. My guess is both programs will continue down the same path until someone demands better.

I’m fine with Bolt coming back next year. He won the Big 10 tournament again. I just think he’s maxed out here. If we were to go the analytical and developmental route, I don’t think Bolt would be the coach for that. I think the only way we can maximize Bolt here is to buy better players. Is the ROI even there for that?
I think hosting a regional once every 3-5 years would cover it. We’re spending about 600k-700k less annually on baseball than the SEC teams. 8,000 seats x $63 ave ticket x minimum of 6 games = $3 million without concessions sales. And that’s erroring on the low side while not including the boost to the local economy outside of the athletic department while hosting.

I will try not to be mean…and it may sound this way but it’s not really meant that way.

Just a method I use….

When I run into folks on HuskerMax that just irritate me to no end with their posts.

And I'm not talking about disagreements…if the person has decent logic…states his side clearly…heck, I’m fine with that. There are a bunch of guys in this thread that I just disagree with…… doesn’t mean I don’t like them or that I don’t respect them.

My wife of 44 years disagrees with me constantly and sometimes she wins me over to her side of the argument.

But there are some folks that are just far beyond that (to me) …..not using any logic, common sense, empathy or reason in their posts.

Which is totally fine…free country.

Buuuuut I don’t have to listen to them.

And the forum provides a wonderful less advertised tool.

The “Ignore” button which I have employed in this thread. So I have absolutely no idea what a certain person has said.

And I am totally fine with that. And they are probably totally fine with me not listening….and are welcome to do the same to me.

So…everybody happy. And solid discourse can continue….better.

I like happy. I wasted too much of my life being unhappy…… that ain’t happening again.
It's just a message board.
Ignore is for P...
Well never mind, wrong forum.

Expectations for Nebraska Baseball in the future!

It’s a good question in my mind.

So here’s what I’d like to see.

What to continue: (and I realize that some of these are pretty damn hard too do consistently)

Be a contender for the Big Ten conference title every year
Win a bid to the NCAA tournament every year
Keep fan attendance at ball games at a high level.
Play your best baseball at the end of the year
Schedule tough competition outside of the conference.
Recruit well in state and in a 500 mile radius
Maintain Hawks Field as one of the gems of college baseball

What to Improve:

Recruit better in the baseball rich, recruiting areas like Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and now California with the addition of the four West Coast teams
Overall consistency in day-to-day gameplay
Reach that magic number of 40 wins by much better performance in the midweek games
Beat in state rivals Creighton and Omaha consistently
Much better bunt offense and defense
Much better base running

Future goals:

Use NIL and the Transfer Portal to fill gaps in recruiting.
Host an NCAA regional
Advance to an NCAA super regional, possibly even host a super regional, with a shot at the College World Series

Not sure your math works. Tickets historically have not been sold per game but per day ( session). Not sure the $63 is accurate for ticket cost either. Even if their price was correct and it was a ticket per game, there is no way a non-home team game would bring 8K in the seats.

The answer is......4?

4?

Huh...

And I thought the question was

Tom won the Big 8 in year 5, and his teams lived in the top 5-10, every year mostly. If Tom had caught a few breaks, he’d have won the title in 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1993, and 1996. He was that close to 9, NINE. Far more factors than that involved. Nebraska baseball, frankly sucks. If they were an improving type of team, lots of momentum, intangibles, I’d think differently. They have none of that. This current program, is flatlined, stale, and going nowhere in a hurry. Bolt is gaining on nothing.
Close to 9 and didn't get one. So, by definition, not improving. Thank you again.

Mississippi State just hired the guy that Nebraska should have hired 14 years ago.
In retrospect…. Yes….

Excellent Coach…. I met him personally at a high school baseball camp at the University of Virginia. The way he works with and motivates kids is phenomenal.

But then again with our administrators and athletic directors, and yes, some of the fans …. I wonder how long he would have lasted.

I have no idea what his motivations were moving out of Virginia….. but that hiring shocks me. He absolutely did not appear to be an “I’m in it for the money” guy.

But who knows….. I had met and thought I knew a little bit about Florida’s head coach….

And then I listened to that tirade against a young ground crew, an assistant athletic director that is a state Hall of Fame coach…. And some NCAA types….

Over all of the one hour delay of a game.

And I just don’t know anymore.
