Is our 2026 offense built to take advantage of a 21 personnel set?

21 personnel set: 2 TE, 1 RB and 3 WR.

Think of the run and pass opportunities of our athletes in a 21 personnel set. It can be a passing formation or a run heavy fit.

Imagine Luke and Carter as tight ends, Gilmer, Hunter and Bonner at WR, and a RB that can both run up the middle and catch (Mozee, etc?). This set has both size for run blocking and everyone can catch. You can show pass, and then motion Bonner or Luke into a FB position. You can have two TE on the line and motion Bonner into a FB position and you can run power or do play action off of this. You can have Luke on the line with Carter in a spread position, then and motion out the RB. AC would have 6 receivers in routes, or take advantage of a spread out defensive and run with the ball.

If our offensive line can do what we need them to do this year, our personnel can give our offensive coordinator a lot a opportunities to get playmakers in space.

This is the 'X' factor. Without a mobile QB this can all be stopped & we've proven that. We've had great RBs, great TEs and good receivers and couldn't get it done. If AC can spread it out or RUN when needed then we will be good.

Let's see, 2 TE, 1 RB and 3 WR. Add in 1 QB and 5 OL, that's 12 players. Oooo, that would be an advantageous formation!

On the other hand, I think there might be some pesky rule against that... :Stickouttongue:

I think you’ll see Bonner in TE/H-Back sets.

I also think you’ll see Carter, Bonner and Sorensen in 2-TE sets but split out wide depending on matchups.

I hope so, but we said that about Carter and before him Fidone.
Huge difference. One, so far he's healthy, and two, his body type. A more traditional build.
Carter is not going to be a great in line TE, but going 21 set, his matchups open up better and forces the D on how to play him which opens up the run game in one way, or plays to him in the pass game.
If they cant hide what they're doing, the D can be read by our QB and opens that up.

I got the idea for this thread watching some of the old bowl games recently posted where play action passes to TE or wide receivers killed defenses cheating up on heavy formations to stop the run. If we can manage a respectable run game, 21 personnel can open up significant opportunities for potent play action pass.

I think

Emmett Johnson would kill for this year’s version of the OLine.

Now think of the B1G and what they do, what we see.
And many of those teams dont have 2 3 or 4 TEs to pull it off to ever run combos like we could.
