Iowa QB McNamera Not on Depth Chart This Week

The best QB at what? It sounds like he was the best QB to play the style they are WANTING to play, but they may not be complete enough as a team to do yet. If you are transitioning to a different style of offense, you don't hold off until you have every nuance perfected and the roster fitting every possible need. The first year or two is usually a little rocky.
I would think the best at winning? I’m reasonably sure Iowa would play the QB in their judgement gives their team the best chance to win. I’m not so sure Sullivan is an upgrade over McNamara but we’ll just have to see how it plays out over the next 4 games for IA.....

Nope, it's not about just one season, but most fans struggle grasping that. If you are making a significant change in a program, you can't take the easy way, you have to be willing to deal with growing pains. Husker fans, more than most, should be aware of this. We saw it with Callahan, with Bo, with Riley, with Frost and most recently with Rhule. If you are trying to sell recruits on a certain style of play, then you have to at least show that's what you are going to do. You don't fool anyone with 'trust me, as soon as you sign, we'll change it to fit you'.

Perhaps you’re correct but I doubt a competitive team is going to make significant offensive changes 8 games into a 12 game season? Iowa was 5-3 and 1 win away from a bowl? IMO the reason Sullivan is starting now because McNamara was injured and not because he’s the better QB. Guess we’ll get to compare him with McNamara if he remains the starter? They are playing a pretty good Wisky team this weekend so it will be interesting to see how Sullivan does! Anyway it’s a good discussion imo.

I think you're muddying the waters with conventional thinking somewhat. And being conventional, I mostly agree with you.
However we are talking KF and his approach to complimentary football, which isnt as conventional as most.
He has his D, has his incredible DC and so his expectations are led from here. Now your O has to be complimentary of that D.
IMO thats KF in a nutshell

Be interesting to see how Iowa does with their new QB this weekend!

The phase "complimentary football" has a picture of the Iowa football in the dictionary next to its definition. I believe all Ferentz wants is a QB that will manage the game, not make mistakes, win field position and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

No team in the conference has a better defense-special teams combo than Iowa. The difference between Iowa and Wisconsin is Chris McIntosh UW's AD decided he wants to compete for conference championships and the occasional CFP berth ... to do that he's going to have to get away from the Alvarez model that exists in Iowa.

I kind of object to the "pretty good" label assigned to the Wisconsin team. They lost bad last week to Penn State and they're going to lose bad next week to Oregon. They won 3 games in a row prior to PSU against Northwestern, Rutgers and Purdue. Their other two wins is South Dakota and Western Michigan. Not very impressive IMO.

Iowa lost to Michigan State which is crushing because ... if they beat UW this week they play Maryland and UCLA going into the end of the season game against Nebraska. They could be going for 9 wins by then.

McNamara is injured but there appears to be more than that. Not sure if Sullivan is better or not but all Ferentz wants is the kid not to make turnovers, not make mistakes and keep his team in the game.

I believe Ferentz picked the QB to start the season that he thought could win the most games..... Perhaps Sullivan is a better QB but that’s TBD over the next several weeks. If you want to play the who beat who game and by how much, Wisky CRUSHED Purdue 52-6 and Rutgers 42-7 which is a tad more impressive then Nebraska. Smart coaches play their BEST players period, but don’t always get it right imo. So yea I believe Wisky is a solid team and lost to an undefeated team at their house by 15 points. Not exactly a beat down in my book. Wisky is a 3 point dog to IA at their house tomorrow. Let's check out that game as we play both of them!

Obviously no coach gets every player skill or their ceiling 100% right a 100% of the time. My point was most coaches play the players they believe will give them the best chance to win. Burrows is a perfect example of how a coach can clearly miss the mark on a player. Heck didn’t Little Nick replace QB Hurts in the NC game with Tagovailoa? The next season Hurts transferred to Oklahoma...

And I'm saying you know you're going to win as a coach, see osu/iowa, so now its about how.
