Who is it? I think Moos said in his "sidebar" interviews that one of the assistant coaches would be the interim head coach. Who is it? I think I heard Moos say that he encouraged the assistants to stick around to talk to the new coach because there might be opportunity to stay.

Very similar to what was done when Trent Bray was interim head coach after Riley was . It's basically to handle day-to-day aspects and make sure players are going to class.

One cannot back out if no commitment was made in the first place.

No. It means someone needs to hold that position of responsibility during the interim between the old coach and hiring of the new coach.

We have no idea whether Hoiberg was ever in, let alone if he backed out. But the normal act of appointing an interim coach has no bearing on how things are going with finding a new one.
