I was researching the highest paid Special Teams Coaches in FBS and came across some interesting info.

Three former Nebraska coaches are in the top 10, with John Papuchis #2 at $570,000/year, Jovan Dewitt #5 at $500,000/year Ross Els at #7 at $475,000/year.

According to Football Outsiders rankings

Our special teams under Papuchis:
2008: #10
2009: #4
2010: #9
2011: #7

Our special teams under Els:
2012: #79
2013: #46
2014: #5

Our special teams under Dewitt:
2018: #109
2019: #123

UNC Special teams under Dewitt:
2020: #86

I just find it interesting that given our recent woes and frustrations, we have 3 former coaches in the top 15 paid list.

Maybe if they weren't former coaches, we wouldn't have shanked like 14 punts, FGs and PATs this season.

Seriously, can we just fire all our kickers and go to the transfer portal?

Knowing what we know about the value of ST, it looks like we were getting decent ROI with Els and Papuchis.

I’m guessing our current ST isn’t ranked anywhere close to the level these two guys achieved.

I don’t recall Papuchis, Els and Dewitt coaching special teams when they were here.

I will tell you that Paps learned on the job. I was at a coaching clinic in Lincoln when he first got here, he was NOT in any way, shape,or form a special teams coordinator. He had some very good weapons at his disposal. Not saying he didn't learn, but I think it had to do more with the jimmies and Joe's than X's and O's.

I think adding a full time ST coach means Frost would have to show one of our current coaches the door. Suspect that's why he's essentially done very little to hire a very experienced ST coach.
By not doing the obvious thing -- like hiring an ST coach after last year's disaster -- Frost gets to show that he's the smartest guy in the room. Except he isn't.

Reminds me of Cally keeping Coz when anyone with room temp saw he wasn't getting it done! Bottom line his refusal to deal with getting a good DC got him fired imo.

I think his biggest issue is actually finding an O-line coach that is good, but also has great ST credentials as well. He has shown that he will make staff changes, however it seems as if he helps them find a new job. Then says coach so and so is moving on.

I've been searching this list as well. Sean Snyder who we originally went after and thought we had, may be looking for a new job soon.

Do those success numbers have anything to do with guys like Pat Smith, Drew Brown and Sam Foltz as your specialists?

One kickoff wasn’t covered well, and apparently, OU saw something on the extra point because they attacked an area and got the block. Beyond that all I’m seeing is a kicker with the shanks. I’m positive there has been plenty of effort to help the kid dissect his mechanics. We have a special teams coach on the board, and I don’t think he saw anything glaring. I’m not sure of the guys you are lamenting, any have any kicking expertise.
