Indiana v. NU, Game #3, 3/29

Games seem to last forever this weekend…

A lot of it was the pitching changes and a huge amount of pitches thrown.

And we were hitting a lot…. Over 10 hits every game.

I agree….but I want the temper it a bit.

I believe we were way too over aggressive the last few years…. In both are hitting and pitching approach.

Way too many ground out and fly outs on first pitch….

Not a lot of patience…. Not seeing enough pitches to get the feeling for a pitcher.

And our “go for the throat” in early two strike counts used to drive me crazy. Pitchers were throwing a hittable pitch with 0-2 and 1-2 counts.

Not nibbling at a corner or a high fastball to see if they would chase… at least once. And I can’t tell you how many two strike early count hits went against us.

We aren’t doing that at all this year…. We are much more patient in both hitting and pitching.

So I think you have to have the right time to be aggressive.

Timmerman showed exactly that…. and our hitters are waiting to be aggressive on the right pitch after seeing several from the same pitcher.

It’s paying off in spades this year.

Also, we are striking out way…. way less this year..

Putting the ball in play puts the pressure on the defense to make a play…. And if you’ve noticed in almost all of our games…. were putting the bat on the ball….. a LOT…..and the enemy is making errors.
Agreed on seeing/knowing the pitcher, but making contact is being aggressive. Sitting back second or third time up against the same pitcher you shouldnt wait for the perfect pitch. Let the long ball guys go for the big hits.
Nothing more that I hate is watching a batter follow the third strike over the plate.
Thats why the caveat good talent

That is one of the most exasperating things for a coach.

And also it kind of depends on the pitcher.

I saw pitchers in a high level of HS ball where the only really good pitch you were going to get was his first where he tries to get ahead…. they were that good.

And after you saw this a couple of times…it behooved you to go after that first pitch no matter what.

It’s all situational. Just depends on a bunch of factors.

Regardless, the kids are running up the counts, seeing the ball…and definitely making contact.. just a whole bunch of two strike hits this year.

And it’s honestly working.

22-6 at this point in the year, especially with the brutal schedule we opened with on the road.

Sweet!

That was a really nice outing from Katskee today! A first inning like that can spiral and, after heavy utilization of the staff over the weekend, can leave you scrambling. So, huge credit to (1) him extending his day effectively and (2) the offense in getting him the runs for the win he earned and deserved. Yet another game in which the team showed terrific resilience and confidence, letting its talent deliver. Home sweeps when you can get ‘em are gold, especially when you fight through some adversity to do it!

And the ladies taking a series from an off-the-charts talented UCLA squad is monstrous. Good weekend on the ball fields. Let’s keep it going.

GBR!

I missed today's game. Can you be more specific
Both saturday and sunday the umpire had small strike zones. Saturday was consistent but microscopic. Indiana must have had a good report on the ump as most batters went to the box with no intention of swinging. I think both teams combined had 350 pitches in the 7th inning. It just wasn’t baseball.

Sunday the zone was bigger, but inconsistent. Combine that with the excessively long time to review the dropped ball and it was brutal. Why do you have to review what call you made? As an ump, you can’t remember that until the next pitch? Admit you made a mistake and move on, no need to drag it out for 5 or 6 minutes.

UCLA has won 19 straight
They appear to be the Monster this year….not just Big Ten…they beat everyone…rather badly.

But they still have to play the entire West Coast lineup…USC who looks dangerous as hell and a tough Oregon team and a Washington team that can surprise.

So we shall see.

What impresses me about UCLA is they play all of those smaller California schools that are historically good at baseball as well.

The Cal State Fullerton’s, the UC Santa Barbara’s et all. And they have been dominating them too.

But who knows….they were really good last year too…swept us…yet, when we faced them in the Tournament…we dominated.

Baseball is such a streaky, finniky game…..

You learn to just go along for the ride and quit trying to predict it….if you want to keep your sanity.:)

Depending on what is finally adopted in MLB.

I see robot Balls and Strikes in College’s future.

The tech is not expensive.

And I want it badly. I am just REALLY tired of the wildly different strike zones in College Baseball.

I know some folks won’t agree with this….and that’s OK.

But the time has come in my mind.

There is a rule that sets what a strike is…..
It’s a physical distance that can be measured.

Not an arbitrary distance imposed by different human brains every night.

Seems, the officiating in our conference could use some scrutinization. (Wow, tough word to spell off the top of your head!!) :Computer:

Haven't been able to follow the last few games, but I have been checking in. NU is doing pretty good right now..

Need to win against Creighton!! I see we are now ranked 19.. very nice
