Huskers To Host Regional (28 May-1June)

In my mind….there should be zero questions on Bolt's contract.

We have taken “steps up” Since he joined the program.

4 of 6 years in the NCAA…3 Big Ten championships.

This is what you call “building a program for consistency”.

There will be down years….it's baseball….but you strive for consistency.

You get consistency through continuity and reputation,

Talk to other college baseball coaches and media writers…..and from my understanding….Bolt is held in high esteem.

And……there is the undeniable fact that Nebraska is a “Northern School” in a smaller state not a hot bed for talent. And I personally have zero idea how much NIL and recruiting money he gets. Heck…I can’t even get Nebraska folks to tell me how many exact SCHOLARSHIPS Nebraska actually offers in Baseball now. with new NCAA rules, we can offer up to 38….do we FUND those 38?

You can bet SEC schools do….

So I think we need to have high expectations…..always! But at the same time we need to have reasonable expectations.

I HATE coaching churn….it’s rarely productive in the long run and incredibly expensive. Necessary in some situations….but I would HATE to see us get into Football's problem…. Firing someone who is VERY successful à la Solich and Pellini. Simply because “excellent or very good” was not Natty.

I would expect Bolt to deservedly get a two year extension to expand and to be more specific to my previous post. In the context of the question as to how to get to the next level? I think it is a fair question as it is reasonable to have the expectation to get to a regional every year but the last three years has been overall 3-6 in regional play. Being a northern school I get it where getting to a super regional every year would be extremely difficult. As to the question and discussion of next level, I would think that the conversation would also include what do you need from the athletic department to do their part also for this time to take the next step. I am sure that discussion is taking place.

Just want to respond so that my post is not misinterpreted. Also, for discussion purposes and in the context of this program now being in a really good place, what can we do to make it better?

Big Ten is getting better…. It’s just not “there” yet. West Coast teams have helped a lot, but until more of the traditional Big Ten schools start to put emphasis on baseball…..

You may be correct…. I hope not.
This is what makes a consistent uptrend in baseball so maddeningly challenging. One is that the West Coast Four have incredible access to player talent in a sport where being closer to home matters so Mom & Dad can ride along in person. Two is that for the the Legacy Regime that commit to the sport, other than Northwestern, they’re playing to compete and win (case in point being the miserable weekend in Columbus!). Neither of those groups will cede any ground to us willingly. It’s always gonna be hard, so enjoying and celebrating seasons like 2026 is important, even when my inclination is to nitpick and show exasperation.
:)

What a terrific year for NU sports writ large. Let’s hope this can be the corner-turning year ahead for Rhule and the football team. Already one win in not pursuing Sorsby!

GBR!

Agree that he was also one of our top pitchers this year but just overshadowed by a couple of bad outings which I get will happen. Thank you for providing some context into Gavin's situation yesterday. I take it you had some inside information?

From an analysis standpoint which was frustrating and frustrating to him you could see was the umpire not giving him that high outside corner. Have noticed it all year that pitchers must pitch to conform to too much of an inconsistent strike zone from home plate umpires. It happened yesterday where he had to force the pitches more over the plate. This was evident in the second home run he gave up. That was on the umpires inconsistent strike zone.

Listened to the game traveling on Friday and having to use J'Shawn really impacted the rest of the weekend. No fault of anyone or nothing to be critical about it, just as a result of all the balls being hard hit but at someone in the early innings. Those get thru and more runs early in the SDSU game, J'Shawn likely would not had to have been used.

Agree with John that there is a lot to like going into next year. Have some big holes to fill in the infield and left field but strong starting rotation going into next year.

Also, if I am not correct please tell me but Bolt has only three years on his contract, expect an extension but am almost certain the first question he is expecting is what are his plans to get to the next level of regional finals and a super regional.

Enjoyed the fellowship this year all.

And how is it no one has made mention of UCLA being eliminated!
no inside info, just watching him puke from the stands.

Left a nice present for asu pitcher behind the mound

Looked up the word nuance in the dictionary and it said being a baseball pitcher. Meaning there might be a reason behind this.......

FB….you raise great questions and I did not interpret your response as negative in any way.

I guess I am getting too sensitive with the way the entire forum itself seems to have moved in such a negative direction. Not this thread but too many of the posters seem far more interested in everything that is wrong (in their minds) while downplaying anything that goes well for us.

Are we fans and positive people having fun discussing in a friendly fashion the ins and outs of the sport and team we love?……and trying to support our team?….or just here to bitch and be negative.

I've seen far too much of the negative side of this on HuskerMax to the point that I now only take part in very few threads.

Anyway….soapbox over..

How do we get to the next level?

At the bottom of this, and I hate to say it…. But it’s money.

In order to compete in the future, we’re going to have to be able to pay a competitive amount in both the salary portion now authorized by the NCAA up to $20.5 million of our budget….. as well as NIL.

I’m convinced Nebraska is in good financial shape and one of the few schools that will be able to compete in this arena.

The second thing that we’re going to have to do is use our gateway into the West Coast with the addition of the West Coast schools and use that as an entryway into recruiting.

Bolt’s recruiting area is traditionally the Midwest and Texas…. We may need to hire some additional assistant coaches who can recruit on the West Coast. Our name will be familiar out there, and we’ve been successful to those people two years running ever since they joined the Big Ten. They know us….. We will have some clout. Bolt absolutely has to have the funding to be able to do that.

The next thing is we absolutely need to continue the tough scheduling that we have done for the last couple of years. We cannot afford to approach it the way Purdue does…. A super padded, easy, begin the season schedule only two get blistered when they actual conference play starts….. and overall our conference isn’t that strong anyway.

We need to actually make sure we fund all 38 scholarships available. I have a sneaking suspicion that we are not doing that and we have raised the amount from the original 11.7 to a higher amount, but to take the next step those 38 scholarships are going to have to be fully funded. It will also help recruiting.

Finally, and we do a pretty good job of this already, but our facilities need constant, upkeep, and upgrading if necessary. I had heard Hawks Field was starting to look a bit “used”… that can’t happen, and we need to be in discussions with the city of Lincoln to make sure that that facility is every bit as gorgeous as your common SEC or ACC facility.

Now take this all with the grain of salt…. What the hell do I know. I’m just a former grunt who jumped out of airplanes for 25 years and then a semi successful high school baseball coach.

But I have stayed married for 46 years…. So there is that.

Not to be all sour grapes, because we had a good year and all... But when the regional brackets came out, I suspected that we got a bit of a bad draw with both ASU and Ole Miss in our regional.

Then I was reviewing scores today, and I totally overlooked the Austin regional:

UT whorns
UCSB
Tarleton State
Holy Cross

Somebody has some 'splainin' to do...

Total Madness in the Regionals…

UCLA Eliminated
Georgia Tech Eliminated
Florida State Eliminated
Florida Eliminated
Texas A&M Eliminated
Kentucky Eliminated
Tennessee Eliminated
Arkansas Eliminated
Nebraska Eliminated (Darn it!)
Oregon State Eliminated
Virginia Eliminated

That is a good representation of so many of the top teams or big name baseball schools this year.

Alabama is dangerous right now
Georgia I would not want to play
Auburn barely survives
Oklahoma surprises
Ole Miss is good
Mississippi State is good too
Kansas plays very solid
West Virginia very good
Texas gets the softest regional in the history of College Baseball and blunders through
North Carolina is just darn good
USC pitching bounces back
Oregon does as expected

Huge surprises
St Johns ???
Little Rock ???
Troy ???
Cal Poly ???

Baseball is CRAZY! Gotta love it!
