Another hard fought game… back-and-forth. Both teams had their chances early.
And poor Clevinger made just two horrible mistakes in a row that could’ve put us out of the game… he plunked two batters with basis loaded, giving them totally easy runs at a critical time.
But Nebraska eats up relief pitching… I mean they feast on it!
Buck with the grand slam, puts it away in the ninth.
Solid play from both teams… we were simply just better on this weekend. And I’d say by a decent margin. On enemy turf to boot.
We are doing something totally new this year that we haven’t done in the past. And I’m not talking about winning midweek games, which is nice LOL
.
What I’m talking about is we have…. all of a sudden…… a word that we have lacked in the past.
Patience.
Our pitchers get a 0-2 or 1-2 count and don’t immediately go for the throat like we used to. I can’t tell you how many times in the last few years opposing teams have gotten two strike hits with that approach. It was maddening! I never understood why we did it unless our control was just that bad or there was some kind of new analytics that said that’s the best way to go. It’s always best to waste a pitch on 0-2… with a nibble at the corner trying to get them to chase. We didn’t used to do that, but we are doing it now….. in spades. Our pitchers have changed philosophy completely and I love it!
And the same thing is happening with our hitters. Patience! We used to be extremely aggressive on first and second strike pitches, and it worked against us more than it worked for us over the years….. at least in my humble opinion.
Now, I see very patient hitters at the plate…. Waiting for the pitch they know they can crush….or the right situation…I love it!
Win the series and move on…. We did that! On to K-State….a very solid team and another challenge.
GBR!
