NU got hosed in the latest polls. Still 2nd behind Pitt, who lost 1/3 of their #1 votes but still #1.

Huskers have played and won against ten ranked teams including four in the top ten; pitt played and won against three and few ranked team. Who were the clowns who voted them number one.

Poor old SMU has taken down the top 2 teams and still hasn't cracked the top 10. The rest of the top 10 teams remain in the same positions as last week. However, NU is only 8 votes shy of #1. Something to shoot for!

@ Full Husker has good arguments. On the other hand, NU was swept by SMU. PITT swept SMU before losing in 5 (and winning more points). Pitt has lost only one other set all year. Nebraska has lost 7 sets in addition to the SMU loss. And Pitt really passes the eye test. So I have no problem with them staying #1.

I tend to agree, for Pitt it's a push with their lone loss since they also won. That being said Pitt knew what they were in for with SMU while we went down there thinking the team we were facing were not top 25 material.

That is correct. Context matters. NU played SMU in 2023 and swept them. I think NU went down to Dallas on Sept 3rd and thought the SMU match would be the same result as last year, not realizing that SMU in the offseason brought in a bunch of 5th year COVID seniors who completely changed the makeup of that team. Six of the seven SMU starters are "super seniors" (5th year COVID players). Back in the first week of Sept no one knew how good SMU was, and NU was not ready for that match as a result.

Pitt, on the other hand, had a month to study film of SMU and get ready. Also, Pitt had just played SMU three days prior in Pittsburgh.

I would bet the Nebraska players and coaches would love to get a second shot at SMU, especially if they could play SMU in Lincoln.

Last point: a lot of people are talking up the job that Sam Erger, the SMU coach, has done in turning around her program. That may be true this year, but I wonder how viable her strategy is long term. I don't think a strategy of having over half of your starters coming from the transfer portal every year will work. Also, all of her starters will finish their eligibility after this year. Next year could be a very bad year for her, and the shine may wear off. She is a young coach though, so maybe she will learn and successfully recruit good high school players and develop them such that SMU can sustain long term success. The potential is there because Dallas is a rich recruiting ground for high school volleyball talent.

Sorry, but I'll say it again: the portal has bastardized the game! Hopefully, just for1 season, for those who go overboard, loading up their roster.

Have to agree with @Full Husker. We are where we are, because Pitt has lost only 1 set, not counting going 5, losing to SMU, losing on the road to them. They defeated SMU earlier, at home. Unless Pitt loses, we will stay in 2nd. It is what it is. If we meet down the road vs Pitt, this should all come to fruition. Until then:

GO BIG RED!!! :Huskerflag:

Keep Nebraska in the role of being the hunter. I am sure Coach Cook loves that they are still ranked number 2.

Pitt has been very good for several years now and might be the best team in the country. The Huskers only need to be the top four to host the tournament region assigned them. The girls would love to be number one but the staff keeps them grounded. Consider Nebraska's matchups against Pitt in past tournaments (3-1 in 2021, 3-0 in 2023), then ask Dan Fisher who he does NOT want to meet in the tournament again . . .
