Huskers Offer Grad Transfer CB Akayleb Evens

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I know that we do not have a ton of experience on the other side. I did see some real talent in the spring game. Not the least of which was the very impressive walk on Sanford. Who we have since discovered is every bit as athletic as he appeared on that game.

If a coach is bypassing talented transfers who could come in and start for you because of a walk-on, they're managing the roster wrong.

I am a little surprised they want another corner, but maybe they are thinking that they need an experienced guy for next year -- or they really think the defense is going to be very good, and this is the insurance they need to make sure the secondary is truly the strength of the team.

I'd rather they get a kicker or an accomplished pass rush specialist, but maybe this is what they can find.

A kicker? You have an All-Conference kicker. Your walk-on will be your kickoff guy. You're good there.

So are you telling me that based on tackle numbers they are equivalent players?

No not at all but you knew that already

I was simply pointing out that he is a talented CB who could come in and help us opposite Cam as either a starter or provide depth. His numbers would point toward starter. Based on the number of offers he has gotten it's tell tale

I meant kick-off guy -- not worried about Culp -- but If a coach is bypassing talented transfers who could come in and start for you because of a walk-on, they're managing the roster wrong.

You are correct. I did already know that. I had 28 tackles or maybe more my senior year. Doesn't provide much context for me. The offer metric is probably better than tackles.

As you and I both know, the B1G is a tough league, so getting dirty and doing some tackling from the DB position is a good thing. Or maybe he just lets people get catches in front of him and trips them/pushes them outta bounds, 3 times a game.

It was simply to point out that he was similar to Cam as a starting CB as far as stats go. Nothing more and Nothing less

Off we metric insert good since he entered the portal.

Bottom line if you can bring a young man like this in, in a position lacking experience he is going to help either as a starter or depth rotation

It's a bit different when you are talking about a kick off specialist. Nebraska really isn't in a position of depth where they can afford using a scholarship on a deep kicker when a good portion of decent high school kickers can do it and would accept a walk on offer. I think you probably knew this though and are looking for some sort of debate.

If it’s that easy, wouldn’t it have happened over the last several years?

I think you can find someone to kick it deep without using a scholarship. So you would be in favor of your field goal kicker and your kickoff specialist on scholarship? Why we haven't been able to do that is beyond me but we have had a plethora of unheard of injuries to kickers and punters that seem to get the yips.

I was told before spring that corner and OLB they were going to be looking for a grad transfer. OLB I get, we need that "do all" guy that can stay on the field, we are situational at the OLB spot opposite Domann.

I struggled a bit with corner. CTB has one spot locked up, and guys like Newsome, Clark, Joseph, and Lynum have showed flashes. But if you break those down, Newsome was injured most of last year (he is the leader in the clubhouse to start), so behind him you have Clark who is coming off a knee injury and hurt his shoulder, Joseph was a four star everyone thought would be in the mix to start right away in 2020 but just barely played (not calling him Keem Green because it's too early to write him off but certainly a chance), and Lynum is still a freshman along with the other 3 we brought in.

What it tells me is they have a few guys they are comfortable with, but not sold completely on. If you look at it compared to safety where they have 4 guys they feel good if they had to start them, it makes a bit of sense. And Fisher is the one coach I don't question anymore. While he had some bad luck with his 2020 class, he does so much with what he has it's tough to overlook. With that said, a lot of times if a HC asks a position coach "you want another guy" 99/100 times the position coach is going to say yes.
As always magnificent logic and explanation. I still think there are positions of bigger need. However you are def right about Fish.
