Nebraska track and field throwers have swept the Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Husker sophomore Sarah Firestone won the women's award, while senior Will Lohman captured the men's honor.

Husker assistant coach Bill Maxwell to be inducted into the US Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Congrats Coach Maxwell!!!

Nebraska track and field assistant coach Billy Maxwell will be inducted into the U.S.Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame this December, the association announced on Monday.


A nationally renowned sprints/hurdles/relays coach, Maxwell completed his 20th season at Nebraska in 2015. He has been a critical element to the success of the Husker track and field program over the last two decades. Maxwell is a four-time Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, including both indoor and outdoor in 2014. He will join head coach Gary Pepin, who was inducted in 2008, in the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame.


At Nebraska, Maxwell has coached men’s and women’s student-athletes who have earned 42 All-America awards, 33 individual conference titles and three national championships. In his career at Nebraska, Texas, LSU and Tennessee, he has coached 28 NCAA Champions, more than 350 All-Americans, and has been the head coach or assistant coach on four national championship teams, eight second-place teams and seven teams that placed third. Along with his success at the NCAA Championships, Maxwell has been a part of 91 conference championship teams.

Maxwell coached national champions at Nebraska in 2013 (Miles Ukaoma - 400-meter hurdles), 2005 (Dmitrijs Milkevics - 800 meters) and 2004 (Priscilla Lopes-Schliep - 60-meter hurdles). Lopes-Schliep went on to win the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in the 100-meter hurdles.


In 2015, Maxwell guided Oladapo Akinmoladun to a repeat Big Ten Indoor title in the 60-meter hurdles, as well as first-team All-America honors. Maxwell's 4x400-meter relay team (Jake Bender, Levi Gipson, Cody Rush, Drew Wiseman) earned runner-up honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second straight year, running an indoor school-record 3:04.83.

Captains announced for 2016 season

The Nebraska track and field program has named 13 team captains for the 2016 indoor and outdoor seasons.


Five Huskers were captains on last year's squad and will resume their leadership roles in 2016: seniors Craig Driver (pole vault), Cody Rush (sprints), Kari Heck (jumps), Tristen Sharp (throws) and junior Sarah Firestone (javelin).


The Huskers will have eight new captains in the upcoming season. On the men's side, seniors Jake Bender (sprints), Christian Sanderfer (pole vault), Ricco Hall (sprints) and sophomore Landon Bartel (high jump) will serve as captains.


For the women, senior Paula Andrie (pole vault) and three juniors - Anna Peer (distance), Brena Andrews (sprints) and Dani Jones (jumps) - are the new additions.


The Huskers will hold the annual Red-White Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

Husker men ranked #11 in the preseason poll.

Will start the indoor season this weekend.

The Nebraska men's track and field team will begin the 2016 indoor season ranked No. 11 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 poll.

The Huskers are set to open the 2016 season with the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track on Jan. 15-16. The meet begins on Friday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Noon.

Pretty amazing story about Husker Tierra Williams and how she ended up competing for Nebraska in the Omaha World Herald...

When she was 10, her family was displaced from their Louisiana home by Hurricane Katrina. Her mother stood in line at an office that worked to resettle families in different parts of the U.S. The woman in front of her mother was livid when the resettlement worker offered Auburn, Nebraska, as a new place to live.

When the woman left, Williams’ mother, Andrea, told the agency that with six children, she would be happy to go wherever the family could have a home together.

The transition was hard for Williams, an African-American who said she had never spoken to a white person before moving to Auburn, a town of about 3,400 people 65 miles south of Omaha.

The Huskers totaled 116 points over the two-day meet to win their first back-to-back conference indoor titles since 2004 and 2005 in the Big 12.


NU claimed Saturday’s title by a wide margin - 43 points - for the second straight year, as Wisconsin was second with 73 points, and Minnesota was third with 72 points. The Huskers scored 127 points in 2015 and won by 41.

The win gave legendary head coach Gary Pepin his 31st career indoor team championship and 71st career overall conference title in his 36th year at the helm. It’s the third overall Big Ten title for the Husker men since joining the conference in 2012, and the 37th all-time conference indoor title in men’s program history.
