Hiking 2.0

I took a co-worker and her daughter and her daughters husband on a just less than 16 mile loop hike today. We had a stretch of around 1 1/2 miles on an open ridge, where the wind was blowing 30 mph but once we got past that, it was very pleasant weather wise. Kinda funny, but I had to keep looking back to make sure I wasn't leaving them to far behind. Once we got back to the parking area, my co-worker sheepishly apologized for going so slow. Our total time was 5 hours and 55 minutes. Actual hike time was 4 hours and 59 minutes. By myself, I usually hike this same trail in 4 hours, so they only slowed us down by about an hour. Great day indeed.

After a nice 15 1/2 mile hike about 12 days ago, I got in a nice 14 miler today. I think we hit about 78 degrees, and believe it or not, but at this elevation, 78 feels like 88, so it was warm. July is turning out to be SPECTACULAR around here this year, with no smoke from wild fires, and very reasonable temps. As busy as this month is for me, work wise, I've managed to get in over 40(or 50) miles so far this month with several 3 to 5 miles jaunts. Putting my new Salomons through the paces.

Hawaii for our summer vacation. Three main hikes; two really worth mentioning.

First photo is Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, hiking across the crater. Second is Awa'awapuhi Trail on Kauai, overlooking the famous Na Pali Coast.

Hike advice?

The daughter went on a youth group Boundary Waters trip this July and loved it. Now wanting to do a hiking backcountry trip.

Details:
Would be in time frame June 9th-17th.
Fans of western mountains, coming from the flatlands of Iowa
Wife and I have some experience: several overnighters, 1 hike-in to a basecamp for 3 days.
I'm least fit and would call myself about average on fitness. Dayhikes of 6ish miles went ok this summer.

Suggestions? I've looked at the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico and looks appealing. Thoughts or alternatives?

I don't know your fitness level, but if you are in somewhat good condition, absolutely consider the John Muir Trail(it's 211 miles, but of course you don't have to do that, that's insane) https://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/john-muir-trail/

I haven't done most of these, the John Muir Trail is spectacular though... but here is a nice list to consider. https://www.10adventures.com/americ...ved=0ahUKEwja0tmUraLkAhUGnZ4KHZunC7kQ1i8IKjAc

Wife and I went hiking today on Mount Charleston, about 2 miles from the trailhead my wife was attacked by a vicious mountain lion. It would have ripped her to shreds but since I’m an avid reader of HuskerMax I knew exactly how to take care of this blood thirsty beast. I leveraged the crap out of this thing and I doubt it will ever bother another hiker.

with back to school having arrived here's my hiking (running) recap for the summer.

i ran (hiked) the Squamish 50 Miler in August and got some redemption from last years DNF and finished this year in 16:07 which was an improvement of 47 minutes from a few years ago.
if you ever find yourself in Vancouver, BC (which is definitely worth a trip) take a day and drive the 40 minutes north to Squamish. it's a outdoor persons paradise especially if you're into hiking or mountain biking. the trail network there is second to none and really well maintained.

unfortunately i'm the worst for taking pictures while i'm out so i'll have to get some friends to send me some to post.

Football season can never arrive soon enough, but with coaching every day after work it's cut into my running/hiking. we are planning a trip to Canmore/Banff in a couple weeks to run/hike and that might be it until football is over in November. then we will transition to cross country skiing/winter hiking which i am really looking forward to this year. Winter owes us from last year's constant -30 temps.

Very cool. I have this trail roughly 45 minutes or so from me, that has this killer first mile with 1500+ feet of gain, a lake and a great overlook and I've been hiking/running this 7.6 mile trail for 3 years now(roughly 7 or 8 times in total) and my goal was to get this one in under 3 hours and just before the weather turned cold and snowy last year, I got to 3 hours and 6 minutes. Well, I soloed 2 weeks ago, and decided to give this trail another go. Long story short, I crushed it and finished this run in 2 hours and 19 minutes( I had to stop and take my shoe off to get this rather large rock out of my shoe). I was ecstatic with my time of course, and I enjoyed the two beers that followed shortly. Loving my new Salomon's.

CHUPACABRA!

I took a friend and co-worker(she's older, but in good shape relatively speaking) on a "difficult" hike today. A 7 mile hike, with 3.5 one way and the other 3.5 back down.
The .5 is fairly flat, the rest of the 3 is 2949 feet of elevation gain.
I had to slow down, to make sure I just didn't walk off and leave here behind, but I knew that once we summited the ridge, she'd be in awe. Hell, I am always in awe with the view. I'm not ready for winter, although, I will take some fall like temps soon. I've got 3 big hikes I still want to get in this year before the snow starts to fall. I tried to post my pics, no luck, so here is a stock photo from the internet.... that is Aloha Lake in the background.

Colorado - Mueller State Park. Was hoping to see some elk in the meadows; but, we started too late and it was a warm day. around 75-80 degrees at 9,500 feet elevation.

Wife and I are both in the market for new hiking footwear. I’m not fond of my Merrell boots, even though they are comfortable I don’t like they way they restrict my ankle movement. My wife likes the keen targhee and I’m looking at a pair from Solomon.

Oh my.... Merrell's are awesome.... well, for me.... Keen's killed my toes..... My Salomon's are awesome, but needed a definite break in period. I just bought a pair of Merrell Zion's mids and they are awesome and they were good to go right out of the box, no break in needed. At least try them on.... A buck 50 is a lot to pay for shoes, so go with what you feel comfy in.....
