Happy Memorial Day-Freedom isn't Free

Laid flowers on my father and mother in-laws grave at the Sturgis National Cemetery

My mom, dad and brother all served

Mom and dad are buried in the Riverside National Cemetery in California

Born and raised in a military family and having had an English Uncle killed in action this is the most solemn of days

I salute all these fellow warriors who are no longer with us

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Happy Memorial Day to those who have served, and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice!

"For many, Memorial Day means a cookout, a day at the beach or a surefire three-day weekend. It's widely considered the unofficial start of summer in the U.S.

But the federal holiday is a day of remembrance and commemoration for military members who lost their lives in service.

Here’s when Memorial Day 2025 is, a brief history of the holiday and a list of federal holidays in the U.S."

What does Memorial Day represent?

Many people confuse Memorial Day with Veterans’ Day, but they’re completely different.

“The holiday was created to honor the many American men and women who died in military service,” The Farmers’ Almanac said.

“This focus on those who made the ultimate sacrifice sets it apart from Veterans’ Day, which honors all military veterans, living and dead.”

The type of coin left on a gravestone has a specific meaning, personalizing the act and making it even more meaningful.

The Penny

Leaving a penny on a deceased service member's tombstone means you visited their grave.

The Nickel

Leaving a nickel indicates you attended boot camp together.

The Dime

Leaving a dime means you served together in some way.

The Quarter

A quarter is one of the most meaningful coins since it indicates that you were there when the service member died.

Bean, thanks for restarting this solemn thread. It gives thoughtful pause to remember those lost in my last deployment now 20 years ago & to the ultimate sacrifices paid by so many since April 19, 1775.

Just watched the end of the ‘Go for Broke’ 1950s movie this morning about the Japanese American Regiment in WWII … here’s a special salute to the 442nd RCT, to the Navajo Code talkers, and to the Buffalo Soldiers & the Red Tails.
