Not a fan of his shtick. He did mellow out as the game went on today.
Gus' style was great when he was relegated to non-marquee games 10 or so years ago. He put a lot of effort into hyping up teams and games that needed a lot of hype, and it worked when he was doing a Purdue/Minnesota game on BTN at 7pm. Now that he's the voice of CFB on FOX, he hasn't figured out, or simply doesn't want to, that all that extra enthusiasm isn't needed, because the games don't need all the extra hype. It comes across as forced, and in some ways artificial.
I do think there are times where Gus Johnson tries to go all "Gus Johnson" when it's not necessary. However, I will admit, that when it's done right, he's great to listen to. I actually like him more on CBB. I think his style suits basketball better than football.I definitely don't think it's forced or artificial. I definitely can see if people think it's too much or annoying. But with Gus it's absolutely sincere, he legitimately gets that excited.
