Stat nerd that I am, I have compiled a list of the most successful 50 year runs since the end of World War II

1945-1994
1946-1995
1947-1996
etc
through
1973-2022

The top 5 are as follows:

Nebraska 1962-2011 .78969
Ohio St 1973-2022 .78871
Ohio St 1972-2021 .78748
Nebraska 1963-2012 .78746
Nebraska 1961-2010 .78454

Despite our dismal record as of late {as well as a recent thread suggesting we do so} let's not forget that we ARE elite!

What is the criteria of your stats? Wins v losses? How many teams, just the B1G and Nebraska?

These are the top 5 winning percentages over each 50 year span starting from 1945 through 1973 across all of Division 1A / FBS College Football

Example:
1945-1994 the winningest program was Oklahoma at .77558
1948-1997 the winningest program was Penn St at .75725
ending with 1973-2022 Ohio St at .78871

I imagine 1962-2001 is the best 40 year period, and 1970-1999 is right there for best 30 year period.

I think no doubt on the 40 year record. And I have a hard time believing that anyone had a better 30 year record, but now I’ll have to put some time in on that Stassen website to make sure

This is how phenomenally dominant we really were

40 yrs
1962-2001:

1. Nebraska at 83% {.83264}

a

very

distant

2. Penn St at 76% {.76124}

Consider, also, that with just one exception, there is no discrepancy greater than 2 percentage points separating any two successively ranked teams all the way down the list from #2 Penn St to last place #111 UTEP at 29%

Outside of the difference between NU/PSU, the biggest dip is as follows:

20. Washington at 65% {.65011}
21. Miami-Ohio at 62% {.62933}

Think we’ve got a good chance at the 20 year record, but we’ll probably fall short for best decade. ‘92 and ‘98 might hold us back. We had almost as many losses in those two seasons(7) as in the other eight seasons combined(8). Man, how crazy good were those teams?
Actually, if you're going to look at individual decades, themselves, Nebraska WAS the winningest team of the 1980s

1. Nebraska .83740
2. Miami .83193

Might be why so many take pleasure in seeing our struggles today?

Good info Tree...............

Thanks. I printed it so I can give some people I know some crap.....lol.

This one for me, is the greatest run ever in college football history, but, it’s only 40 years. Look how badly Nebraska dominated the landscape? 40 years is plenty long enough to establish roots and history.

I love looking at that chart lol. Good Lord, it’s not even close. Some observations:
-more than a quarter of our losses during this time were to Oklahoma (20 out of 78)
-while the Huskers were absolutely the best team over this stretch, there’s no denying that they(and OU) benefited from some very bad teams in the Big 8. KU, KSU, and ISU were atrocious for most of this period.
-by the same token, Ohio St. and Michigan benefited just as much from awful teams in the Big 10.
-the SEC has to be considered, if not the best, at least the deepest conference during this time period. They’ve got six teams over .600.(Bama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU) Interestingly, the Huskers were 16-3-1 against the SEC during this period, almost exclusively against those six teams. That’s an .825 winning percentage against the cream of the SEC crop, virtually the same as their overall winning percentage.
