I just finished reading the bio of Mike Nichols by Mark Harris (called Mike Nichols - a Life), perhaps the best director of stage plays and movies of our lifetime. For those who like the performing arts, this is a very good read. The author gets into the minds of the persons involved (a very long list of A list performers and participants) and shows two things exceptionally well: (1) how great a director Nichols was and what he did to make that be the case, and (2) that every performer and director in this mileiu is nearly always in a constant state of anxiety and terror as they perform their craft.
I have no idea how they can possibly personally endure their profession.
