I met with Mike Ditka to talk about what became the Nebraska Greats Foundation that I bought to the attention of Jerry Murtaugh and the rest is history. It is modeled after his Gridiron Greats Foundation.

This is the first picture I've ever seen of Ditka where he is smiling

My Mom, Margaret Max with Ed McMahon outside the Council Bluffs casino where he gave his tribute/memories of Johnny Carson. I told him I was going to use his line from the Carnac skits "Everything you ever wanted to know" and add about Nebraska football. He liked the idea and had his son give me his business card to set up a recording of it. Never got it done and regret not doing it.

October 13, 2007 - Jon Bokenkamp, Todd Nelson and myself at the Oklahoma State game that we trailed 38-0 at halftime. Had plenty of seating room in the second half. Jon went on to create the NBC series The Blacklist and Todd is the creator of the Nebraska Coast Connection where Nebraskans in the entertainment industry gather once a month. Jon is from Kearney and Todd is from Holdredge.

I was at that game and knew that Callahan was done. Flying back to Virginia the next day I was watching the news at OHare and they announced Tom Osborne as the new athletic director. He brought in Bo and we had some good seasons of winning.

Is there anyone else who would consider Franklin an upgrade over Rhule? How ironic would that be if we ended up with him.

Strange paradox. I think they are even on coaching ball. One might argue Franklin recruits better, but it’s easier when there’s more backyard talent. I think Rhule is a better culture fit for Nebraska. He seems very genuine. The fishbowl doesn’t seem to bother him. Honest and open. Seems to have embraced the state of Nebraska more than any other coach since Solich.

Ditka's first trip to Lincoln was in 1958 and not a very pleasant visit for him--the Huskers upset Mike and his fellow #14 ranked Pittsburgh team mates 14-6. In that game, Iron Mike did catch 6 passes for 70 yards.
