Like Apocalypse Now, opened to a negative reception.
Kubrick had to cut it down. Compared to two David Lean movies, "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago"
IMO, not incorrect comparisons. While I like to ridicule Zhivago, it really is a quite good movie. Lawrence really drags, however. Space Odyssey is visually spectacular, like both aforementioned movies, while it drags in places, it really is quite good and appropriate in retrospect. I can get how hippies on acid were the only ones to like the movie, however. Dawn of Man is creepy, slow, but fascinating. Kind of like early chapters of Genesis.
