Probably a good thing overall. It seemed like the groups were starting to get off balance under the old model. Plus, it means the World Rankings actually mean something once you get past the top 7/8.
The only thing it didn't mention was how they were going to keep the confederations from doubling up in groups. Assuming it's a blind draw, and if Mexico is in pot 2 and US in pot 3, will they just put the US ball back into the pot if it's drawn? That will be kind of awkward if the draw is still conducted live.
Also, CONCACAF still gets only 2 teams into the 2020 Olympics.
All teams will be allocated to pots 1 to 4 based on sporting principles with each pot containing eight teams. This means that the October 2017 edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be used to allocate all qualified teams to the four pots according to their ranking in descending order, with the best seven teams along with hosts Russia in pot 1.
