You do not need to register if you are not going to pay the yearly fee to post. If you register please click here or log in go to "settings" then "my account" then "User Upgrades" and you can renew.

You are essentially correct (although hairs can be split over "emoji" versus "smiley" as one is effectively a font character while the other is an image embed). However, feel free to ignore my OCD nerdspeak about it.
Anyway, you are not missing anything. There indeed is no kool-aid 'like' option right now. Just letting you know there is a close alternative.
Maybe you guys can lobby @BigRedMax to let me add one, though....

I think we're looking for a Koolaid option on the 'like' button on the bottom right. Too much work getting to that koolaid icon, I'm sweating just thinking of the extra steps...As @36Blast noted, our eclectic smiley collection does include a kool-aid option:
