If he gets 8+ with this schedule, I will be satisfied. That would be an actual step forward. The 2026 schedule is a frickin gauntlet.

I suppose I should be happy if we rise to the upper tier of mediocrity. If we can’t ever hope to compete with the big boys, we should have stayed in the Big 12. While my stomach turns at the level of mediocre football we have come to accept at Nebraska, the program has improved from the lower tier of irrelevant mediocrity. If we get to 8 wins, I will certainly be happy with the improvement, but we should be aiming higher.

In ten seasons from 1932 to 1941, Bernie Bierman coached the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 63-12-5 record (.840,) 7 Big Ten titles, and 5 National Championships. Minnesota was the college football powerhouse.

World War II intervened, and from 1942 to 1944 George Hauser took over as head coach, never finishing better than 4th in the Big Ten.

After the war, Bierman returned but the magic was gone. He coached for six more years, going 30-23-1 (.566,) and never finished higher than 3rd in conference.

Notable season post-Beirman where 1960, 1967, and 2019.

In 1960, led by Murray Warmath, who coached 18 years at Minnesota, the Gophers finished 8-2, tied for the Big Ten title and won their last National Championship. (Minnesota was voted #1 in the AP poll but lost to Washington in the Rose Bowl. They can claim the National title because the final votes were taken before bowl games.)

In 1967, still under Warmath, tied for 1st in conference but did not go to the Rose Bowl Game due to the conferences tie-breaker rules. They finished unranked in the AP poll and 14th in the coaches poll.

In 2019, under P.J. Fleck, Minnesota tied for 1st in the Big Ten West, won the Outback Bowl, and finished 10th in both the AP and Coaches polls.

College Football powers rise above the fray then recede into the dustbin of history. For 36 years, NU was the definitive force in college football. Sadly, its glory days are over.

Regardless of what NU does this fall, Rhule will be at NU in 2027. They can’t afford his buyout, don’t want to afford his buyout. That said, there is a ton of opportunities for the team this year. Michigan State to me, is a HUGE game. First road game, can’t go pull a Minnesota. Win that, you to 4-0 with Maryland coming in the following week at home. 5-0, with the defending champs coming in next. 5-0, some confidence, and a massive opportunity. Really need to be 5-0 at this point. Pull the upset, and get to 6-0, and you’re likely nearing the top 10, especially after beating Indiana. Can’t lose that Michigan State game. It jacks up the whole season if you lose. It’s pipe dreams right now, but that’s what they are looking at. Loads of opportunity.
Yeah i agree! We have to beat an elite team or two this year! Rhule needs to evaluate his in game management skills! He has made really questionable decisions! I still cant accept that we dont have a legimate chance to win everytime we set on the field!

I've no doubt that if we get to a bowl game this year, Rhule's job is safe. I said in another thread that if the bottom falls out and we win only 2-3 games, he'll be on the hot seat. I still think that but I don't think they'd fire him considering next years strength of schedule.
Personally, I'll wait until the '27 season, which looks just about as easy as a Big Ten schedule can be. Less than 8 wins in '27 and I think Rhule's tenure at NU will be in serious jeopardy.
Already done it IMO. Like Luke Fickell path ......

Snake oil salesman ???

2026 season ..... I'm afraid BEST scenario, 6W-6L.

However right now, Huskers' undefeated record ;)

We have started the past 2 seasons 5-0…then we lose 5 or 6 straight. Rhule’s job may be safe but he is the glaring underachiever at NU—and with the most resources. If Bolt gets that baseball team to CWS…we will be on quite a roll.

Please define "come to accept". And maybe while you are at it, define "we" also.

Basically you are making a blanket statement implying all NU fans are now happy with a 7 win season. I don't think you are reading the room correctly.

It’s an all too frequent sentiment, even in this thread.
